Special to The Star Port Townsend March 17 a city was visited by an earthquake about 20 o clock last night. The tremor caused alarm but no casualties were reported and residents reflected that their homes were not sturdy structures.

M. J. A. Moore of the Washington hotel described the tremor as a sea voyage with a broad solid foundation preventing damage. He said the big hotel on the hill endured three undulations, like ship rottings, ending with a lingering ripple before the illusion faded.

A sequence of strong earthquake shocks rattled Everett and North Yakima on March 17 causing panic and brief disruptions. In Everett the Labor temple tremor prompted an investigation by the trades council and the Weyerhauser mill paused operations. Joseph Hall received two years and six months in the penitentiary for attempted burglary linked to a second-hand store break in on Washington street. James Rogers, acting as his own lawyer, was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary after being found guilty by a superior court jury.

Russian Ship Losses and Port Arthur Bombardment Report

At Port Arthur on March 17 three Norwegian steamers chartered by Russians arrived with reports from the bombardment. A Jap shell allegedly struck the battleship Retvisan, killing 19, while the cruiser Diana was hit at the water line and eight killed. Five Russian cruisers then set out to pursue the Japanese fleet.

Port Arthur reports from St Petersburg say Admiral Togo's fleet, after disappearing last Thursday, was sighted near the harbor early yesterday but withdrew to sea. The move is read as a plan for another Port Arthur bombardment but canceled by Tokyo dispatches directing pursuit of the Vladivostok squadron.
