Dispatches report Gen. De la Rey defeated Sir George Methuen near Mafeking, stating Methuen captured with 800 troops and four guns after a Boer flank assault. Reports say parts of the British force attempted cover and a gallant defense failed, with heavy casualties and prisoners.
