Tokyo dispatches report Oyama driving Kuropatkin toward retreat with Russians wavering morale while Mukden battles rage. Kuropatkin denies cut lines but admits a Russian left flank near Rennenkampf feares encirclement. Reports claim Machun Tan captured after heavy fighting. Russian high command debates strategy and potential withdrawal.
Reports from the Far East describe the Battle of Mukden intensifying with about one million troops engaged. After 11 days of fighting both sides suffer enormous losses and extreme exhaustion with Koropatkin holding Machun Tan and forces retreating northward as Tokio and St. Petersburg sources foresee the fall of Mukden within reach.
Reports from the front paint a catastrophic retreat of Kuropatkin's army from Mukden with Japanese infantry in close pursuit. Supplies burned to deny them, trains disrupted, and fires threaten the city as news reaches St. Petersburg.
G A Madden of Chititu Alaska was injured in a collision between a street car and a street sweeper yesterday afternoon. He is confined to a room at the Diller hotel with bruises and probable internal injuries. He was unconscious and cannot recall the accident. Eyewitness versions vary. the driver or the electric company may be at fault. Foreman E B Thomas of the street cleaning department investigates.
The Canadian Pacific announces increased service on the Vancouver trains with new tour jet cars. The new Vancouver-bound train is described as the finest coming to the coast, with Mr. Calder, general agent, stating patrols on the Vancouver run will receive the best summer treatment.
In Washington March, Senators Ankeny and Pile presented the state to the president for a new judicial district and urged a position for Gen Thomas H. Kavanaugh. In Rome, Father Martin, the Jesuits’ general known as the Black Pope, is dying of liver cancer.

In LA GRAND Oregon March 8 Spencer Field ten and Lee Fields nine perished and suffered burns after a lamp exploded while a mother was away leaving the locked home with the key taken. The fire a lamp explosion trapped the youngsters in their room.
At the Seattle Athletic club last night a banquet honored Captain J. Howard Darlington and Lieutenant R. Webb Winnedge of company D. N. G. W. Sixty members in full dress uniform attended. George K. Rogers Woodmen of the World organizer, based in Denver, was in the city on private business and showed interest in local mines.

An acetylene gas blast in the Mormon meeting house at Granger near Salt Lake City last night wrecked the building seven miles south of here. Nellie McKay was killed when the organ fell on her as she sang. Ida Smith Vivi Wallace Hazel Murphy Eunice McRae and 19 others were injured. The stove blew through the ceiling and walls were blown out. Twenty six people were hurt in the disaster.
Senator Potts, a juvenile king county puppet, was invited by President Coon to occupy the president's chair during a committee session. He stammered an excuse and left, leaving the senators disappointed at the prospect of watching him perform as a parliamentarian.
