Reports from St Petersburg and Mukden describe a fierce artillery duel and Russian counterattacks. Kuropatkin reports Japanese pressure along the Shakhe system with heavy losses on both sides. Marshal Oyama declares continued envelopment and a hard struggle near Mukden.
Kuropatkin describes Friday clashes on the Mukden Sinmintin road with Japanese forces advancing from the west. Fire rings near Suchuzin while Shakhe center remains quiet except for grenade exchanges at fortifications. Major General Schatoloff and Colonel Guerko were wounded as Japanese attacks around Gaotu pass and Kandalesan positions were repelled. total 13 charges reported.
For ten days a massive artillery duel rages around Mukden as Russian forces under Kuropatkin defend a stronghold against a determined Japanese assault. The front lines stretch seven miles parallel to the railway with heavy casualties on both sides and refugees fleeing southward amid constant shelling.

Chicago March 6. Twenty more subpoenas are issued for workers and members of the beef trust to testify before the federal grand jury on March 20, pushing the total over two hundred subpoenas issued in the investigation.

James A. Moore and Jacob Furth offer $100 scholarships to be awarded in June. One goes to the electrical engineering student with top work in physics mathematics and electrical engineering. The other rewards the liberal arts student with best work in physics and mathematics.
An Indianapolis grand jury investigating legislative bribery tied to the anti cigarette bill reported there were no indictments. It found no graft system and said the legislature was notably free from corruption.
H. and Rowe, acting as general agent for the Milwaukee and St Paul line, arrived in the city this week to assess land prospects and discuss service expansion with local officials.

In Bearmouth Montana yesterday afternoon a freight train and the westbound Twin City express collided on the Northern Pacific. Two men were killed instantly and six were injured. Victims include W F Wilcox and J L Billhan of Helena. Injured include F W Smith Joe L James Mrs T H Ferrier and Marie Taylor. Cause cited as orders misunderstanding.
The state dairy commission reports Pete Cerini, a dairyman, arrested on a warrant for delivering impure milk to Duwamish Dairy at Fifth Avenue South and Weller Street on March 3. Readings allege the milk was contaminated and the commissioners have multiple witnesses.
Mary Ann Kearney is granted a divorce from Michael Kearney on desertion and infidelity. Co respondent named is Mrs. A. M. Simmons. Custody awarded to plaintiff with community property division including waterfront property and a $5,000 lot with improvements in the DPD T. Denny Home addition. Defendant ordered to pay $60 weekly support.
A divorce suit reveals mutual accusations. Margaret Holland claims Cornelius is spendthrift, neglects support, and jealous. she cites moved towns and bills unpaid. Cornelius replies she is vain and extravagant, accuses her of infidelity with two men including a sea captain, and notes her visits to Grant's cafe on Third Avenue with other men.
Local sports page previews Burns Sullivan fight in Tacoma with hype of a hot start to the bout. William Matthews won $1250 in damages from Seattle Renton Electric for injuries from a Renton collision, suffering a stiff neck.
