Chehalis March 5 Oscar B Main brother of Justice Main faces trial for the murder of Fred H Swayne Napavine merchant and Mrs Swayne with prosecutors arguing Main plotted divorces and that Main and Mrs Swayne were seen entering and leaving Swayne’s office. The defense contends business relations and a frameup with witnesses and alibi support. The jury of eight men and four women heard testimony as nearly 49 witnesses are subpoenaed.
Washington reports four dozen American soldiers were killed in action in France by March 2 end of month figures show 252 wounded and 25 captured or missing according to War Department records.
American troops repelled a German surprise attack in the Lorraine region near Paris, captured prisoners, and the French war office announced on March 5.

Spokane March 5 federal officers warn that eight hour day and beds in logging camps remove I W W agitation aims. Any further agitation will be sedition and offenders will be dealt with. Plans for a house cleaning to rid Spokane of radicals begin today with federal and city officers. The effort may extend to all Inland Empire counties.

Senator James Hamilton Lewis declares the United States will defend democracy and rejects rumors of any secret accord with Japan. He says Japan’s actions in Siberia and against Germany are tied to Britain’s anti aggression pact and emphasizes the U S will resist any conduct threatening democratic principles.
London reports a German airplane bombed Petrograd on Monday night with the Nicholas station as a believed target. Casualties were not yet known. Antiaircraft forces repelled Zeppelins from the outskirts. The attack followed the Brest-Litovsk peace signing announced by both sides.
In Petrograd on March 4 the Moscow council of workmen peasants soldiers and Cossacks refused to ratify the German peace treaty and is expected to declare a holy war against the invaders. A broad socialistic defense movement forms with leftists and Bolsheviks largely opposing the treaty.
