Engineers oppose transfer of reclamation service to army engineers
Washington June 27 engineering leaders condemn Taft Ballinger plans to move the reclamation service from civil to army engineers. Chas Whiting Baker says civil engineers view the proposal as humiliating and warn army officials lack irrigation experience and could hinder efficiency while Newell’s removal would be deeply disappointing.

Tong war erupts in New York Chinatown with multiple casualties
In Chinatown a Tong war flare up left two men dead and a third wounded after a volley of over 40 shots in about 90 seconds. Seven Chinamen were arrested within three minutes. The 2000th anniversary of the Society of the Four Brothers coincided with a Pell Street banquet scheduled for 5 o’clock.
