Lowell Mellett reports that American forces have consolidated positions north and east of Belleau Wood, eliminating German advance threats. Marines hold the wood with 400-plus prisoners taken, including 62 machine guns, four trench mortars, rifles, and ammunition. bayonet victory at dawn.
One hundred seventy one Seattle high school students received diplomas Wednesday as Broadway and other schools held ceremonies in various auditoriums. Chief speakers included George A. Spencer Nathan Eckstein Richard Windsor Frank Cooper and T R Cole. Valedictorians and salutatorians listed with schools and names. flowers could not be received or delivered during the exercises.
June 12 dispatch reports American marines clearing Belleau wood five miles west of Chateau Thierry. French and German lines describe brutal fighting with heavy casualties. Prisoners reveal German units include youths and Jewish regiments. captured officer cites US strength under 200,000 in France.
The government asks Western Union to reinstate telegraphers and compensate lost time. International President Konenkamp says full union support is pledged if a nationwide strike occurs.
