The Simpson murder trial progresses as the defense rests its case with testimony from the accused's family asserting insanity. Coroner Hoye and Dr. H Taylor are slated to testify for the state this afternoon, with rebuttal from experts for the defense. The court adjourned to resume at 1 pm and a late verdict is anticipated.
In San Francisco June 7 the Supreme Court remanded for a new trial in a case by Wm. H. Frindley to remove George H. Clark as Sacramento mayor. It ruled Clark’s election expense statement invalid and improper funds were used, potentially restoring former Mayor Wm. Land.

The grand jury indicted Lt. Robinson for impersonating a post office inspector and extorting 109 dollars from Edith and M. Van Zandt. George B. Patten was charged with sending an obscene letter to Mamie Pope of Mt. Vernon. Antonio Romanoc faces charges for importing four Italian laborers, Frank Romiley of Spokane and John Smith of Tekoa accused of liquor sales to Indiana. Hiram Brooks is not indicted for counterfeiting.
The forecast calls for fair conditions in Seattle and surrounding areas tonight and Saturday with light south winds.
The regular meeting of the board of school directors will be held this evening at Marion Street and Seventh Avenue. Bids will be opened and the contract for the new Green Lake school is expected to be awarded given the building’s urgent necessity.
The steamer Bertha under Capt Johan sen of the Alaska Commercial Co arrived from Cook Inlet and intermediate points last night carrying 13 passengers. Passengers report a rush from Walidea to the Chestochena digging and say the government military road, as far as completed, is in use by travelers. The government wharf at Fort Iscum was nearly completed when the Bertha departed.
The city council special committee reconvenes tonight to pursue official corruption charges. Last night’s session repeated the same points as Councilman Inehart was absent, and I. L. Blaine is expected to present statements.
Bloodless Paris reports Max Regia, noted Hebrew, and M. Laberdesque an Iran journalist, fought a duel this morning. The encounter lasted two and a half hours with no result and adjourned until tomorrow.

August Toeliner historian of the Washington volunteers is appointed to organize volunteers and militiamen for the funeral of Col J. J. Weisenberger at Whatcom. They are to meet at the Armory tomorrow evening in uniform to depart by steamer for Whatcom during the night.
London June 7. Sir Blundell Maple alleged in the house of commons that British officers swindled the government by buying horses for the South Africa campaign. He claimed one officer netted about 250000 dollars from fraudulent vouchers. The debate led to a vote approving nearly 80000000 dollars for transports and remounts.
At a Nanaimo meeting held last night the Nanaimo Shipbuilding Co proposed capital of 100000 dollars and to import from Nova Scotia sixty to seventy shipwrights with their families.
Fire started in a dry kiln at a Vancouver lumber yard wrecked the villa and damaged machinery. Total loss estimated at 46000 dollars with 30000 dollars insured.

ST. JOSEPH Mo June 7 Captain H B Townsend died at his home in East Maryville at 88. He was an intimate friend of Lincoln and Grant and a noted figure in local history.
