The yacht Volntan owned by Arthur Colburn of Philadelphia was wrecked in a storm off Greenwich. Colburn, three daughters, the sailing master and one sailor drowned. Mrs Spankle, another daughter, and the steward were rescued during a pleasure cruise off the New England coast.
Manager Ruswell of the Third Avenue theater treated about sixty children from the House of the Good Shepherd to a summer excursion at Pleasant Beach aboard the Inland Flyer. Sisters chaperoned along with actress Blanche Stoddard and several Misses Nagle O'Donnell Ward Bowles Harber. An elaborate lunch preceded a cheerful afternoon of activities.

John and Thomas Considine face first degree murder charges and requested more time to plead. Judge Emory, set to be away, granted a plea deadline to August 6 with trial anticipated for early September. Civil cases may be reassigned to other departments during the delay.
Frank McCoy a Seattle tailor who arrived with his family from the Sound was drowned in the Straits late last night after borrowing a boat and diving to recover it. His disappearance followed a brief submersion as police and volunteers conducted a prolonged search. McCoy formerly lived in Denver and had recently settled in Beattie and belonged to the Woodmen of the World.
Robbers blew open the Menlo Park post office safe at 4 am and damaged the building. They stole $250 in cash and $700 in postage stamps and fled, with no clues to their identities.
Tacoma May 19 The Tacoma Metal Trades council says a Washington dispatch directs the Oregon to skip Bremerton dry dock for repairs and 100 Bremerton workers were laid off indefinitely today as plans changed.
County Fruit Inspector W H Brown and Commissioner von Holderbeke inspected apples peaches and pears imported by the steamer Walla Wal from California. All peaches were wormy and about 1600 boxes will be returned or destroyed. Brown defends discretion saying not all fruit is from California and Yakima Wenatchee also supply poor fruit. No action against Brown was planned per von Holderbeke.
Chicago July 19 The Union Brewery firemen who earlier left due to no union contract now lead for a strike. Other brewery workers quit when called upon. A general action will be taken next with a strike ordered. most local breweries affected.
The court awarded Dorina Crivelli letters of administration for her mother Bertha Criville's estate. A creditor who acted as administrator earlier was found to be improper since Dorina believed a child was designated in the will. The petition was granted after the misinterpretation was explained.
A sharp engagement at Jamestown saw Boer attackers repulsed by the Connaught Rangers after hours of fighting. Seven British soldiers were killed and 20 wounded. Boer losses were not reported.
