Gov Hammond of Minnesota travels via Great Northern from the East to Seattle and Oregon Washington railway to return south. Portland teachers host them as city officials urge Seattle teachers to arrange a warm welcome and boost civic spirit during Shriner week.
Washington's wheat crop this year may top 40 million bushels, boosting a $40 million cash flow into the state and supporting Seattle flour mills. Harvesting spreads through Walla Walla Grant Franklin Adamas and Whitman counties with Whitman set to be a top wheat county. Record yields per acre expected, with 60 bushels an acre possible in some 40 acre tracts, positioning Washington among the nation's leading wheat states. Seattle mills are expected to stay busy as Europe faces shortages and wheat exports rise.
Seattle hosts a citywide Mardi Gras from 8 pm to midnight with maskers and shrines police vowing to clamp down on rowdy behavior. Governor Lister and Mayor Gill will lead the Tilikum march from Second Ave to Union and Fourth, while bands perform around official grandstands.
The United States informs Britain it will insist on full American rights in prize cases and will not recognize restraint by municipal law. The State Department says a general caveat was filed, with protest over detention of certain goods, not individuals. Press reports say Wilson will leave Sunday to prepare for a meeting on Tuesday.
Minnesota Governor W. H Hammond arrives in Seattle with a 40 member official party aboard the Great Northern. The Commercial Club plans a welcome as Seattle hosts Minnesota visitors prior to their 11 am departure for San Francisco. A large Seattle contingent of Minnesota natives will greet them, while conflicting reports note 50 Cleveland teachers arriving early from Portland. Local Shrines and Sons of the American Revolution delegates also receive greetings from Seattle groups.
Charlies Crane, a night porter at the New Richmond hotel, is in the city hospital with injuries from an encounter with a burglar on Friday night. Crane spotted the man on a fifth floor fire escape at about 11 30. He alerted police who found no trace. Early Saturday morning Crane again saw the burglar on the fire escape and chased him. A scuffle ensued, the intruder fired once injuring Crane and threw him two flights down the escape. Crane was not seriously hurt.
Water will be shut off on Mt Rainier Drive from McClellan Street to Serris on Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Affected area includes a portion of the district between Mt Rainier Drive and Hunter Boulevard and Lake Washington may also be short of water during this time.
City council members announced a Saturday inquiry into assistants in the corporation counsel office handling private cases while in office. They warned such conduct risks conflicts and questions about city pay for time and talent, noting civil service rules apply to staff. Councilman Hanna leads the efficiency committee, saying the practice has long existed and should be stopped.
