Navy plan to relieve Asiatic squadron before Manila
The navy considers returning ships from the Asiatic squadron to the United States for overhaul after Admiral Dewey's arrival. Eighteen months in the tropics is seen as long enough, with vessels from Baltimore to Monocacy slated for reassignment. Light draft ships will remain to support operations, and overhauls will shift crews and boats to refresh the fighting force.
