The correspondent reports extensive loss from a flood in the Houston area and district. Death toll estimated at 100 or more with potential for rises. Property and crop damage run into millions as water covers towns and farmland. Rescue and refuge efforts underway with affected residents helping each other.
Nanaimo residents F W Miller and George H M Stevens recount a Seattle visit with tales of the tenderloin district. Miller reports a 1400 theft at a Washington Street saloon, while Stevens notes the loss of a gold watch and 9 in cash. Police may be investigating female suspects. Father Clark’s arrival opens the Christian Endeavor Convention in Detroit with formal activities to begin later.
Four whitecaps, Wynn, Catlett, Typton and Pleas, were hanged in Sevifavilla Tennessee for the murder of William Whaley and his wife. The four belonged to an organization linked to a series of murders.
Wiley Benton the dog catcher faced serious trouble after a colored ball where liquor was involved. A dispute over a minor matter led Benton to display authority, resulting in a swollen head. He reported to police quarters and was relieved of his star as an inquiry was ordered.

The Gentle Yukon Transportation Co. plans to increase its Seattle to St. Michael steamship service by chartering the Laurada. The steamer is slated to depart Seattle around July 2 and is currently at St. Michael, expected to arrive July 1. The Laurada will operate two trips to St. Michael marking the season’s near end, in connection with the series steamer expected from Michael around July 1.
Apia dispatch reports June 2 that commissioners favor restoring large native district control. They propose a native council to handle only native affairs.
John Nevin, a laborer, was struck by a switch engine near the foot of Columbus Street around 1 29 this morning. He was taken to the police station and attended by Dr McKechnie. No bones were broken but internal injuries may prove fatal.
The White Pass & Yukon Railway will run the first train from the summit to Bennett tomorrow under the supervision of General Manager B C Hawkins. Opening had been planned for July 15 but urgent business needs require an earlier through train. Temporary tracks are laid while permanent roadbed work continues.
In St Pretersbury on July 6 two assassination attempts against the Afghan ameer were reported. The ameer's brother, a throne claimant, prompted poison in his food which was detected. An unknown assailant fired at the ameer but missed and fled.
The Pilgrim steamer arrives from Skagway and ties up at Arlington dock. Owned by Marty Dumars, the ship’s engineer, it left Skagway on June 26 after a tedious southward voyage and a stop at nearly ...
The Pilgrim, a slender 60 foot vessel built in Portland, recently moved from Skagway toward Seattle to operate along the Bound, with authorities noting intermediate ports along the coast to replenish fuel and water. Meanwhile reports from Havana to Barcelona describe unrest, deaths in Minnesota and Iowa regiments, a large fire on Chambers Street, and rioting with property losses in Barcelona.
Laurie Pedenck, a child visiting South Brooklyn, was burned to death when her light fabric dress caught fire while playing with firecrackers. Relief efforts failed and she died after several hours of agony.
Two boys aged seven and nine found a dynamite box in Denny Way partly buried. They mistaken it for a firecracker lit it and were thrown to the ground injuring them severely. Dr Loughary says each likely will lose an eye. The powder was left by workers in the East Denny Way sewer. Miss Evelyn Mason of Victoria, B C, 18, was badly burned when a fire cracker ignited her dress on Pioneer square near the Rowan float. A nearby man knelt and tried to smother the flames, saving her from a worse fate as she was rushed to the Victoria boat for medical care.

The bomb exploded in the Tammany camp yesterday as Gov. Hoge of Texas delivered a five minute speech that annihilated Van Wyck's presidential bid and stampeded the crowd toward Bryan. Hoge said he knew nothing of the Van Wyck boom and did not intend to influence the meeting.
An uprising reported in Monte Cristo San Domingo with Juan Jimines at its head. The town’s population is terror-stricken as Jiminez, a presidential candidate, leads the revolt.
Six bidders submitted bids for the Sacred Heart church ranging from 29000 to 90000 dollars. After discussion the committee found prices too high and decided to furnish materials and contract the work. The basement will be finished and the superstructure built first. The main auditorium funding is not yet available.
Brigadier General Charles King, back from the Philippines, argues the failure to suppress the rebellion stems from too small a force. He says Otis should have 60,000 troops, or 50,000 with cavalry, at the war’s start and that 15,000 was insufficient to defeat a better equipped native foe. He forecasts a three to four year war if the method continues.
