The Seattle Retail Grocers association warns that short weights in package goods drive higher living costs. J J Higgins says manufacturers bear fault while grocers act as middlemen, noting laws failed to require clear weight labeling. Prices rise as costs of doing business and margins push up staples.
Della Davis, an inmate of a disreputable house on Fourth Day South near King Street, was shot through the stomach by Mayo Miles, an inmate of the same place, after a jealous quarrel. The wounded woman was taken to Providence hospital in no immediate danger. Miles, Bert Bowlin, and Sadie Johnson were jailed or detained as witnesses. The quarrel reportedly began over Bowlin.
The President of the Pacifie Coast Steamship Co. arrived from San Francisco praising a new wireless telegraph system deployed on this trip. Operator Arthur Isbell managed the service for Massie Co. with plans to equip Queen and City of. Passengers used the service to contact friends. Rates were 1 dollar for 16 words plus 7 cents each extra word to San Francisco. Nome St Michael route rate 1.50 dollars for 10 words plus 16 cents each extra word.
In Valdez on July 3 a looming clash gathers between Bruner’s Alaska & Pacific Terminal and Guggenheim’s Copper River & Northwest Railway over a disputed right of way. Bruner forces arm and fortify with brick houses as both sides mobilize troops amid reports of a donkey engine powered godevil hurling rails at the contested area.
Visiting oarsmen from Portland Vancouver Nelson and Victoria faced no transport or shelter upon arrival for the North Pacific Association regatta in Seattle. The United States case against L. Mazuresisky was dropped after his death by self harm in Tacoma. Mazuresky, arrested February 16 with J. M. Flynn and O H. Smith for buying clothing from soldiers, chose death over trial. Flynn and Smith faces outcomes tied to plea and fines set in the aftermath.
