Two survivors recount heroic conduct of Valencia officers and passengers as 141 are feared dead from the wreck off British Columbia. Local relief efforts struggle to reach nine survivors at the Telegraph Huts while Captain and crew are praised for bravery amid continuing search and rescue.
A steamship Valencia wreck on Wednesday killed all twenty people aboard when the foretop mast detached from the shattered hull and plummeted into the sea. Rescuers watched as the rope-bound victims were unable to escape before the spar sank.
Survivors recall Chief Engineer W Downing declaring his intent to die rather than face the sea. He fired a revolver near Sea Bird rocks as the Val d encia broke apart, with F F Campbell nearby, before others reached shore. Downing was a well known figure along the coast in engineering roles.
Survivor accounts describe the wreck of the Queen off Point Henle with many drowned and none saved. 18 men in a life raft fought the sea to reach the City of Topeka, while others perished on the ship. Captain Johnson is praised for heroism amid chaos and fading hope.
G Willetts describes a steamer wreck off Port Angeles on January 23 at 12 07 am. The ship struck a reef, listed, and broke apart. Lifeboats failed, passengers clung to rigging as waves swept all overboard, and many perished including a boy and his family. Fragments tell of a reaching line, rescue attempts, and a foretop mast collapse.
Eighteen Valencia survivors clung to a frail life raft in the straits and were rescued by a boat from the steamer City of Topeka late yesterday afternoon. They were half dead from exposure and too weak to grasp a thrown rope.
The Pacific Coast Steamship Cottage City reached Seattle at 9 36 am with flag at half mast after receiving news of the Valencia disaster in St Petersburg. It carried 65 passengers including Mrs Mille and daughter from Sitka and Agent Murphy. They cite 25 below zero in Alaska and report a Ju neau marshal arrest in Missoula January 19 of Emma Rowe and Smith Higgins for grand larceny involving 800 dollars belonging to four minor children.
Judge Fra ter rules the disputed nuncupative will of John Sullivan cannot probate Marie Carran had claimed heirship. The decision states no nuncupative will was ever left by Sullivan. Case to be appealed.
Dispatches from Port Townsend report the steamer Alice Gertrude saying the tug J F Boyden saw a large weasel bottom up outside Cape Flattery and lumber scattered about. Local mariners suspect the French bark Admiral Courbet, overdue since leaving San Francisco for the Sound eight days ago. The Marine Exchange notes a two masted steamer passed Port Crescent at 1 30 pm with lumber onboard, presumed driven back by a storm.
