Victoria B C Jan 24 The Valencia disaster unfolds with 100 aboard and 17 survivors reaching shore by small boats and cliff rescue. Rescue ships struggle amid heavy seas while authorities close docks to crowds awaiting word on missing passengers and crew.
J. W. Sibley Jr., son of L. W. Sibley of 443 2nd Ave S, listed among the dead. He previously worked as a bellboy at the Hotel Ceell in this city for 15 months until Nov 1, 1905, then in San Francisco at the Langham Hotel until Jan 15. He wrote home from Frisco saying he would return on the Valencia, but no further word reached the family before a Star extra edition carried the fatal message.
