U S May Break Even On Ships

The Emergency Fleet Corporation reports 1 765 ships completed for the government by January 23, including 523 wood and 1 242 steel, totalling 9 700 000 tons. Up to December 21, 1 740 ships delivered, 1 975 hulks untonched, 2 261 keels laid. If all ships are sold, profits and losses vary: steel ships may yield about 172 500 000 in profit on 11 500 000 tons, wooden ships face heavy losses, with total costs near 3 000 000 000 to the government, charged to the cost of the war. A separate coroner's jury urges a watchman be stationed at the cramping near Orillia after a fatal interurban collision January 14.
