Leavitt Pays Peyton and Holsheimer in Blackmail Plot
Leavitt gave Peyton fifty dollars into his automobile and handed Holsheimer and Peyton five hundred dollars each. Mackintosh’s report contradicts Holsheimer’s claim the money was kept in an overcoat pocket. Holsheimer allegedly took the money and hid it in his own pocket. Leargitt organized Peyton and Holsheimer’s arrest after blackmail. The money came from an inside pocket of Holzheimer’s clothes. Both men confessed at District Attorney Fredericks’ home and pleaded for leniency, fearing their families’ suffering. Fredericks, defended by Mackintosh, refused to be tainted by the attack and said he would let the matter drop if both resigned from office.
