A major blaze swept a Cincinnati building with the Pike opera house as a landmark. Several people were unaccounted for, but later reports suggested no lives were lost. Fire began in the basement and rained burning embers miles away while more crews fought the flames for hours.
Local officials offered limited details after a jury inquiry into town affairs. Mayor Humes expressed displeasure and denied knowledge of the closings or reasons, stating he only read summaries from the current review.
Galveston proposes a sea wall 98 feet long at the base and rising higher with five forts to shield the city from tides. Milton Ohio police report Knapp confessed to five killings across Cincinnati Indianapolis Winnati and Marlton including Mary Mokert Jennie Connors Hannah Goddard Ida Gebhard and Ina. He claims no clear motive and expresses remorse while awaiting trial for first degree murder.
