A remarkable event unites residents as a massive elk figure paraded through the streets this morning. Locals greeted bystanders with a single phrase Hello, Bill, as the procession drew attention in the waterfront city. Authorities report no injuries and no traffic disruptions.
At Birmingham Virginia mine 156 men were inside during the blast. Fifty three bodies have been recovered by noon, five men were pulled out alive but died soon after exposure. Miners from fifty miles away assist the recovery as the mine remains flooded and deadly. Coroner begins an inquiry into possible gross neglect.
Tonight and Thursday expect occasional rain with south to west winds. The lowest temperature in the past 24 hours was 49 degrees, recorded overnight, while at 6 o clock the mercury reached 63 degrees.

Fresno Calif Feb 22 What may be the largest tree planting event in California took place in Fresno county with 2 500 trees planted by women and school children along the road from Fresno to Kingsbury. Special trains cars and other conveyances carried participants to points between Fresno and Kingsbury 22 miles away. Residents of Fresno Fowler Selma Reedley and Kingsbury divided the road into districts and ranchers joined in. The plan aims to plant trees along the road and across the county 65 miles wide with nearly half the work completed by sundown.
Hartwell Paul Warener was charged in Seattle with selling corrupted and unprovisioned meat to the public. The complaint sworn by M. Ittee states Hartwell sold a dead hen and attempted to pass it as market meat. He was held on $906 bond with a hearing set for February 2%.*

Additionally, Tokyo reports the Japanese government orders immediate construction of torpedo boat destroyers in fifteen government yards and ten private yards.
Senator Emmons, one of the legislators accused of doodling, was taken from his hotel to the Sisters hospital yesterday to undergo an appendicitis operation. His condition is described as critical.
A clever burglar used skeleton keys to enter six rooms at Mont Claire House, 1114 Sixth Avenue, yesterday afternoon. Jewelry money and valuables worth over 60 dollars were stolen. a vague witness described a man seen nearby days earlier.
