Alfred W. Seymour of No 3 Union Court moves nearer a fortune estimated from 500 490 to 6 000 000 as New York appellate division upholds validity of family stock in Metals and Mechanics Bank of New York. The stock, once valued at 14 000, has grown via interest to millions. the bank had challenged its date of issue. Seymour and his wife run the Woman's Exchange bakery and the Alley Kat cafe in Seattle.
Washington Feb 13 Uncle Joe Cannon says he will not seek reelection to the 18th Illinois district seat. He turns 86 March 7 and cites failing vision as a reason. He plans to return to Danville Illinois to rest and manage his affairs after this term ends. Cannon first won election in 1872 and served almost continuously, with defeats and returns in 1890 1892 and 1912.
Fire roared through the Tinion Oil Co. well at Santa Fe Springs driving a 400 foot white flame into the air. Derricks and machinery are destroyed and nearby wells two miles away are at grave risk. Miss Anna Swigert, a Woodinville teacher, was fined ten dollars by Justice C C Dalton for heating. pupil Howard Hoffman filed an appeal.
Police report a wave of violence tied to Hip Sing and Bing Kong tong feuds. Two men Toy Jow and Hong Sing slain at Seventh Ave and King St, En Engyn wounded at 709 King St, seven suspects in custody as detectives probe a Pacific coast tong conflict with killings in Ban Joe and Butte.
Raymond J. Bischoff, dubbed Chicago Ponzi, asks Federal Judge Landis for 30 days to recover part of losses affecting 3,500 workers who invested 4.5 million dollars with him. He seeks bankruptcy relief and claims double cross by Chicago financiers. He denies paying 100 percent interest and cites a 60 percent high. He admits deserting from American and Canadian forces in World War I.
Authorities questioned Willie Lou Barker, four, claiming her account holds the key to solving the murder of her parents, Mr and Mrs Barker, and the fatal wounding of Homer Turk, 13, in Concord near Waco. The girl said two men shot her father, then killed her mother with an ax after demanding money from the grocery store owners. the Turk boy was found crushed under a bed.
