A 200 foot level collapse at a mine trapped the shaft mouth and released earth that buried the entrance. Bread and ham were blown into the air by a strong air blast used to ventilate the mine, snacking miners amid the disruption. Superintendent How Kine said repairs would start immediately and operations should resume within 10 days.
Abe Ruef plans a home visit to see his elderly mother who is unaware of his Quentin imprisonment for bribery. Sheriff Eggers granted permission upon request from Wm. L Lawler and Ruef must obtain a document at his old home before the trip. The exact date is undecided but the visit will occur soon.
Rain is expected tonight and Friday with moderate southerly winds. The noon temperature should be around 51 degrees.

In Gilroy California on February 8 Charles Ottoline aged 70 sacrificed himself to save his dog by leaping in front of a rushing passenger train. He threw the dog to safety but was killed under the wheels.
A cargo of relics from the wrecked battleship Maine arrived in Annapolis. The Leonidas will distribute the artifacts among victims families survivors municipalities and societies. The Maine’s main mast will mark graves at Arlington National Cemetery.
James Mills of Riverside California testifies at the horticultural convention and citrus growers league meeting in Washington. He says foreign pests raise living costs, claiming a billion dollars in damages from destroyer pests and fruit losses. He advocates a quarantine line to keep pests out.
Joseph F. Haugan aged 17 a fireman for Northern Pacific was run over and killed by a freight train in the yards at the foot of Massachusetts street last evening. His parents reside in Reville 8 D and have been notified.
In Goldfield Nevada the county paid Jennie Epright twenty dollars to leave jail. She had been sentenced 100 days earlier for assaulting an officer and refused all offers to have the fine paid. The sheriff ordered her to leave but she refused until county commissioners intervened.
Wyandotte birds from Iowa won all blue ribbons in their class at the poultry show’s second day. They also earned one second and two third place ribbons. Ralph Randell, formerly a judge at Crystal Palace in London, judged the bantams. Large attendance at show opening.
Parish, a leading mayoral hopeful, refuses to appear before the Quiz Congress citing prior engagements. He sent a letter to President H. C. Pigott stating his speaking schedule will keep him from attending the quiz sessions before the primaries. Hugh M. E. L. Berg of Amity Oregon paid $90 for a toothache cure when two men entered a Portland hotel room and relieved him of his money. Berg was robbed by Jay Price and C. H. Stephens who were later arrested and identified by Berg at the police station. He noted his toothache quit after the robbery.
Miss Grace Melina wed Lieut. Commander Samuel Brown Thomas U S N today in a bedside ceremony at the California club as he battles double pneumonia. The planned church wedding was canceled. Thomas could not lift his head but whispered his responses during the service.
In London on February 8, Robert G Barker a common day laborer began an eight month prison term to shield his brother suspected of arson from imprisonment. Though evidence showed his innocence Barker refused to drop the plea saying he did not want his brother to lose his good name or job in another town.

In Astoria on February 8, John Schrome, a sailor, was pulled from the Columbia River after being shoved in by merchant Alexander McKevitt. McKevitt offered Schrome a new suit of clothes, but Schrome refused, noting both needed a bath and clothes.
Redlands California February 8. Red lands college says it is no place for a minister's daughter or for Cupid after the elopement of Leonard Fowler and Beatrice Fessenden, who were students. Trustees pledged to discipline future offenders.
