A friend thwarted a kidnapping attempt on a child known as Little Ella Basket. The would be kidnapper and accomplices fought a desperate battle with the victim’s rescuer near the waterfront. The girl is in critical condition following the incident around 11 30 last night.
A Mods dispatch reports a large body of strikers attempting to force a lace factory to quit work were fired on by troops, with fighting continuing through the afternoon. Coal miners also struck in the Dombrowa district, raising fears for the industrial situation as many centers rely on those districts. Estimated dead reach two hundred, unidentified fatalities to be buried tonight. A St. Petersburg dispatch says the czar will receive a deputation of workers from the government printing works.
Ellen Rackett, 15, lies injured after a dramatic confrontation aboard a tugboat where Landerkin, a fugitive, attacked to abduct her and steal from the Baskett home. Carl Olsen, a contractor, fought him off aiding Ellen. a warrant for assault and battery is issued.
A persistent burglar dubbed the Nipper Man continued to strike across the city last night. He escaped with cash and valuables from several residences, including 70 dollars, a gold watch and jewelry, while alarms and rocks at stores signaled his activity. Police tracked reports from SG, Alfred Stahl, M F Getchell, and others, but he eluded capture. The Pebble burglar also targeted Newman's grocery store with a window-breaking attack, and the Independent Telephone Co reports loss of rope used by workers.

The funeral for Frank Croker son of Richard Croker who died in a Daytona Beach car race accident was held today at St Ignatius Church in New York. A large crowd attended the services and burial followed at Calvary Cemetery.
Henry Girard, a local vocal and instrumental instructor, is named organist at St. Mark's church and will officiate for the firetime next Sunday. He arrived April 25, 1904, to pursue his musical career and is building a fine conservatory at Oliver Street and Seventeenth Avenue, set to be completed early this summer.
Col A J Blethen editor of the Times was reported very low after collapsing at his desk. Doctors fear the grip attack and overwork may develop into pneumonia though no immediate danger is declared. Clarence Blethen said his father is very low but improving slowly.
Customs officials believe two white men known as James Callahan alias Smuggler Jim and Swifty Bi Wakefield, linked to long-running contraband and dope smuggling, died in the Rosario strait storm on January 24. Descriptions match two men seen leaving Vancouver on January 20 in a damaged sloop later found near Rosario strait.
Vancouver customs officials identify Arcata as a smuggling vessel with no license. They believe the crew planned to cruise near the San Juan islands and may have died attempting to cross the strait in a fierce storm at night. No bodies found yet, but identification is expected soon.

Estimated losses include the Josephine building at 100000 dollars, Walsh at 59006, Zeigenheim at 50000, with other structures damaged up to 50000 dollars.
A Chehalis fire yesterday morning destroyed Geissier's new Grand opera house block and the adjoining Scherer block. Estimated damage is ten thousand dollars with insurance of three thousand five hundred on the opera house block and two thousand on the Scherer block. Cause of the fire is unknown.
The 147th anniversary of Robert Burns was celebrated at the Grand Opera House by the Caledonian club Clan MacKenzie and local Scots. The program featured bagpipe music by Hector Mackenzie, Scottish readings by Miss Monita Meikle, Scotch songs by Miss Elia Walker, and a talk by Rev. W D Simonds. A packed audience gave repeated encores and praised the overall excellent program.

Assistant United States Attorney Cushman lost cash after a thief rifled his trousers on the Bellingham from Seattle steamer. The robber stole a $90 check and cash from pockets, but Cushman recovered the crumpled garments and had them repaired by a Port Townsend tailor.
In Chehalis, the adultery charges against George R. Cowles and Mrs. Lula Evans were dismissed after a settlement with Emma R. Cowles. Dr. Cowles, also known as Kolz, agreed to pay Mrs. Cowles 200 dollars monthly starting March 1, and the case costs were settled. Mrs. Cowles returned to Portland. Kolz remained in town.
Bernie Lavin survived a two story fall into an elevator shaft on Jackson street and walked to police headquarters with minor bruises treated by Dr. Snyder. He emerged unharmed despite the peril, while the Crane company building is the site of the incident.
