Prison in the World Aims at Finest Over Seven Years

The Star reports from Wenworth Kansas that eight hundred inmates at a new federal prison near the army’s stronghold labor daily for ten hours a day to build a facility claimed as the finest in the world. The walls stretch 900 by 800 feet on bedrock, 35 feet high, with white enamel brick interiors and lighted cells. Convicts quarry stone, run electric wiring, and manufacture brick for a mostly wood-free, gleaming complex with a two ton daily ice plant, a 2000-seat chapel, and a dining hall for 2000. Maj. McClaughry commands 1,081 prisoners including whites, Indians, Mexicans, and military detainees. The warden’s model prison draws visitors worldwide.
