Chicago December 15. Capt Charles Pike of the army medical corps was abducted from his bride after a th presence. He was seized by three men who carried him into a lobby and driven away toward Indiana later held for bigamy in an unclear Indiana locale.
A. L. Beadford reports that the United States plans a major intervention in Europe. President Harding and Secretary Hughes have directed Ambassador George Harvey to return to Washington for consultations on the European crisis. A Washington conference to ease France’s economy and a private loan to Germany are possible developments.
Col line states intent to resign as administrations change to allow new commissioners to appoint a successor. Bank officials and lawyers argued over penalties for grand larceny and prosecutions, with the attorney general later ruling the bank could be punished up to a $5,000 fine if convicted. John Washel a 26 year old roofer fell 60 feet from the edge of Pier 1 while working on the icy boards. He was taken to City Hospital where doctors failed to save him dying from a fractured skull. He lived at the O K hotel and left no known relatives per the coroner.

University of Washington officials announced a new explosive powder made of ammonium nitrate and sawdust that can blast large fir stumps cheaply. It costs about 5 to 6 cents per pound versus 15 cents for dynamite and is nearly TNT in power. Professor Wm. M. Dehn, originator of the compound, plans to offer it at practical cost through state channels. The demonstration showed 25 pounds lifting a fir stump and creating a crater, with potential big gains for land clearing and regional farmers.
Mrs Ethel Brew, 50, killed herself in her room at the St. Regis apartments 1417 13th ave at noon Friday using her husband’s .38 Colt. Four shots fired. one hit her leg another pierced a wall a third penetrated a door the fourth struck her heart. Fire caused flames quickly extinguished by Mrs John L Matson and her husband. Detectives cite melancholia and nervous trouble. The Brews moved from Spokane two months ago. no children.
