City officials say a 5-cent fare cannot support the municipal railway system. Mayor Caldwell and most council members oppose the cut, warning it would force tapping the general fund. Only Councilman Fitzgerald doubts the financial squeeze and supports the idea under a self-supporting plan.
In Chicago on December 15 the United States circuit court of appeals upheld the right of coal miners to operate the check off system to collect union dues. The decision overturned Judge A B Anderson in Indianapolis and ordered a new injunction to allow dues collection under existing contracts. The court also restrained attempts to unionize West Virginia miners, stating a conspiracy to eliminate competition.
The veteran bandmaster John Philip Sousa at 66 continues a wide range of interests. He is a novelist, horseman, marksman and traveler besides composer. Sousa will perform Friday at the Masonic Temple in Seattle with afternoon and evening concerts.
A three power meeting produced a complete agreement on naval armament limitation. Britain indicated acceptance of a settlement as discussions suggested Japan would retain the Mutsu under certain realignment terms. The plan balanced tonnage among the United States Britain and Japan with Britain facing potential overbalance if super Hood class ships are allowed.
Seattle ranked 25th among 50 cities in postal receipts for November, reported by Postmaster General Hays. Seattle posted $186,551, while Portland stood 29th at $170,804 and San Francisco 10th with $602,223.98.
Mrs Rey Olmstead of 5555 Brander street lost control on McClellan street near 30th avenue S. as her car skidded into a ditch injuring three laborers: Anthony Mapoli 35 Ralph DeMarguy 29 and Clark Madison 60. Madison suffered a broken back and the others head injuries. The men worked on a concrete mixer and were pinned between equipment. Olmstead was arrested then released on recognizance. Her husband is a former police lieutenant.
A steamer believed to be the Shodac ran ashore at Stone Horse during a heavy squall. The vessel, carrying 30 crewmen, sent distress calls as eight feet of water flooded the hold. Eight coast guardsmen went to the wreck and remained aboard.
Four affidavits filed in superior court allege jurors were separated during the trial of Mrs. Johnson convicted of forgery in the first degree. One juror, A M Flammant, says he was alone in the jury room about an hour on the morning of November 30. Other jurors say the rest viewed the Marshal Foch parade in another area, leaving Flammant locked in the room. Attorney Thomas J. Casey began investigating after a phone claim of a payoff for a new trial.
Washington officials say a number of political prisoners will be paroled before Christmas, with Eugene V. Debs among those expected to be released though no official confirmation was given.
