Chicago endures an intense cold wave with 13 degrees below zero last night. The city mourns rising deaths from diphtheria and a sharp rise in injuries on slick streets as transit slows and the homeless seek shelter in police stations.
The northwest faced the coldest December weather in years with temperatures ranging from five below to two below zero. The thermometer showed extreme lows yesterday and last night.
New York society circles swirl around a divorce filing by Mrs. Everett M. Culver wife of Senator W. A. Clark's associate. The piece alleges co respondent links and reveals a colorful, notorious figure named Viaste, described as a former banana and candy peddler with Greek ties and a history of legal troubles.
Mrs Solon J Vias to files for 500000 alleging Mrs Culver willfully tried to injure her by enticing her husband to live apart. She cites travels to Paris and Switzerland near New York and other cities where he resided. Vias claims he sought a divorce. Culver denies the charges and says she is being blackmailed.
Iglar broke into Furth residence at 0:90 o'clock, taking a mink shoulder cape, a silk waist, a velvet wallet, an opera glass, and toilet articles. Fred K. Bruve reported the theft to police after Furth discovered the loss upon returning to her room. Suspect fled when a visitor entered. police suspect the same thief who previously robbed the resident’s home.
Five die and ten injured in a derailment three miles east of Albia on the Chicago Burlington and Quincy line. A westbound passenger train struck Cedar Creek bridge, two engines and several cars derailed, fire followed, and Mildred Mitchen, age 3, burned to death on a bridge girder as her mother was killed in the wreck. Also listed are MERA W. BE MITCHEN of Albia and THOMAS BRATTY among the dead, with other victims identified as PRANKLIN and an unknown man. In a separate Piedmont West Virginia crash, five died and many were injured when a freight rolled off a grade, trapping crew in a ravine. engineers ERNEST D. ERVINE, EMERY ERWIN, and firemen WALTER BEMINE and J M CARTER, plus brakeman JONAN HATERS are named among the dead.
Two well dressed men robbed D. W. Sullivan a laundry wagon driver at Ninth Avenue and Westlake Avenue Saturday night around 11 o clock. One man asked directions then the second, armed with a heavy revolver, forced Sullivan to surrender and searched his pockets. Continuous details follow.
Des Moines December 4 Three trainmen died and five were injured in a head on collision between a regular westbound and an extra eastbound freight train on the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul line near Adel Iowa. Fireman Oscar Dyke and others are listed among the injured with names including Frank Finnicum Walter Ward Kinogmr.
Sullivan describes two armed assailants who held him at gunpoint and escaped with 110. Detectives Adame and Lane investigated Saturday night and believe they can identify the bandits.
Dr Kenneth Turner of 1008 Pith Avenue woke to a rear door disturbance and fired on a burglar crouching near the floor. The assailant fled with a second man as the police searched the alley, leaving no trace.

Lederer may pursue prep studies in the East, and McKimon is popular but unlikely to run.
