Indignation Meeting Over City Grade and Assessments
Latona owners held an indignation meeting at May's hall to protest a 36 foot street grade plan that would affect properties from Latona to 10th Avenue. They argue the project benefits Seattle Electric but devalues their land while offering little personal benefit. A committee will probe legality, with a report due Thursday night.

Almost A Disaster As Fire Forces Ship To Move
The German steamship Marte was saved from an oil-fueled catastrophe when fire crews quickly extinguished a blaze in her forward hold at Pier 4. With 200000 gallons of kerosene aboard and a crew including 40 Chinese and nine whites, officials warned that a longer fire could have caused an explosion. The vessel, formerly English, carried flour and freight and was to sail to Vladivostok under Barnes & Hibbard charter. An auxiliary note mentions a benefit entertainment by Japanese talent at Christensen's hall Saturday night.
