Berlin reports Pola Negri remains married to a Polish count who refuses divorce while media note her engagement to Charley Chaplin. The Neue Berliner Zettung conveyed the claim today.
11 year old reporter Marie Kiernan interviews Mayor Brown who says police corruption stems from temptation and proposes higher pay for peace officers. He blames factors from wealthier citizens and vows to reform Seattle’s police department to restore trust.
In San Francisco on December 9 Lettie Fraties of Carmel by the Sea was named in the Gretzbach Proud Glotebach divorce case. Mme Matzenauer Proud Glotebach’s answer accuses Fraties of being the source of all domestic troubles. Fraties is described as the former chauffeur husband of the plaintiff.
Port Angeles reports heavy snow prevents manhunters from pursuing Charlee Butt, the convicted murderer who escaped from the county jail last Monday. Authorities fear Butt has fled into Canada as searches stall and only circulars are being issued.
Berlin reports a mass meeting with broad participation across classes denouncing French occupation of the Ruhr valley. Demonstrators voiced unity and urged government action in protest of the occupation.
A Duff family mystery in an Omaha like scene draws neighbors and a University of Washington professor into a baffling case. Thomas Duff reportedly leaves nightly after dinner with no hint of motive while his wife Helen Duff pleads for answers as their son Danny shows signs of distress.
In Brilliant British Columbia a fire engulfed two large community houses and surrounding auxiliary dwellings owned by the Doukhobor group. seventy people were left homeless and an elderly member named Brepanbatky Trouabaft died, with his charred body found inside a central hut. Authorities suspect an overloaded stove overheated during sleep.
In Oxford Mississippi Mrs. Lee M. Russell testified in a $100,000 seduction suit against Governor Lee M. Russell. She said she brought Miss Frances Birkhead into their home to help her reform and supported other aspects of the governor’s testimony.
The United States railroad labor board cut 1.6 million dollars annually from wages of 11,000 telegraphers on 11 western railroads. The action followed a railroad request to remedy pay inequalities between station and telegraph workers.
Washington December 9 a ship subsidy measure cleared a Senate committee by an 11 to 6 vote for a favorable report. A minority report will also be filed by Senator Fletcher a Democrat opposing the measure.
Captain Nansen, famed explorer, telegraphs the need for a large loan guaranteed by the League of Nations to aid Greek refugees impoverished by the Turkish war. He urges the relief request be considered by the minister in Laucanne.
The crew of the Seattle fishing schooner Washington, wrecked in Yakutaka Bay Alaska while seeking shelter from violent storms on the night of November 11, were reported safe in Seward Alaska. Captain Oswald Pilsen said the men were completely exhausted after the long ordeal.
The Seattle Players club plans a benefit performance to aid Astoria fire victims. Members will meet at the Northold Inn Sunday to finalize arrangements for the show and discuss the relief effort.
Reported missing persons follow yesterday fire that destroyed the mess section in Astoria. Looting is suppressed with guards under orders to shoot. Two thousand homeless, ten days rations needed, relief stations and central distribution set up as authorities probe suspected incendiary origins.
In Astoria on December 9 merchants reported large losses with about 70 percent insured. Bee Hive department store faced 338000 dollars in losses, Skalleruds 125000, J C Penny 75000, Owl Drug 50000 and Fisher Bros 100000. Banks and firms also show substantial uninsured exposure with Astoria National Bank 60000 and Astoria Savings 75000 among others.
George L. Baker issues a call for immediate aid from citizens, tarters, wholesalers and others to sustain the flow of relief supplies to Astoria, as relief efforts begun yesterday continue.
A Saturday letter from Charles B. Hall, manager of the Horse Heaven Development Co, accuses district directors of blocking the vast 32 million dollar irrigation project by refusing offers from bond houses and hindering contractor bids. The letter alleges conflicts of interest involving Amon and Hughes.
