Astoria’s rich history and recent losses shadow a city once built by John Jacob Astor and the Northwest Company. The Tonquin voyage, fort construction, and a brutal massacre mark an early chapter in Pacific Northwest development.
A young woman, Mrs. Pettijohn, drowned when a cabin door opened during a 1 am cruise from Ballard locks through Puget Sound into Lake Union and Lake Washington. J T Whitig, who leapt into icy water to help, was rescued after attempting to save her. The party included Ina Niederauer and Mrs. J M Lehas among others. coroner and harbor patrol investigated. Services at St Johns Danish Lutheran mission Sunday.

Three theaters in Astoria managed by John Hamrick of Seattle were burned in a Friday morning fire. Hamrick could not reach Arthur Hile to confirm details as the city was cut off, and The Star provided the first information. The Blue Mouse, the most significant theater in the group, had just been completed. the other two were smaller houses. All theaters were insured and operated independently of the Blue Mouse chain in Seattle Tacoma and Portland.
Twelve vessels from Seattle cleared through Astoria for Portland before the blaze broke out. The Hammond dock, once the only large port for ocean liners, was destroyed earlier, leaving few ships in harbor. Quarantine station ships are safe, and the lumber trade remains suppressed after last summer’s fire at the Hammond mill.

Seattle Red Cross pledges aid to victims via civic chapters. It stands ready to act upon request from San Francisco relief officials and will coordinate through the local chapter if needed.
City council finance utilities committees favor a report on a 5 cent car fare with no token transfer price change. Proposals include transfers for riders and a potential reduced fare for school children. Deliberations continue as council members seek more time to study the measure.
In Modena Italy the town of Plandegalli was evacuated as a landslide toppled an estimated hundred houses. Six hundred people fled the area, leaving the town deserted and its residents homeless amid continuing danger.
