The Amalgamated workers thwarted a steel trust bid to import non union labor to Pittsburgh mills. A star scout returned from an Eastern tour reporting trust agents deceived workers about their plans and the true situation.
A cyclone passing over Fi ume today caused heavy shipping damage. Eighteen coastwise vessels anchored in the harbor were sunk and 26 persons drowned.
Aug 7 APPOINTED report says L. H. Valentine has been appointed United States attorney for the Southern district of California.
Two more men were killed today while attempting to shut off the immense output of the Beaumont oil well. They were overcome by gas as the gusher continued to spit vast quantities of oil. Early reports state over 106000 barrels have already been wasted.
Johnson entered the city's largest gambling house this morning and, at gunpoint, forced the bookkeeper to hand over a sack containing $4270. He escaped but was arrested a few hours later with the money on his person.
This morning a collision occurred as both vessels were at the Colman dock. The City of Aberdeen, heavy and slow to answer its wheel, backed into the ferry City of Seattle causing minor damage but no injuries. Passengers were prostrated and furniture toppled as remarks blamed poor handling of the Aberdeen.
W. J. Smiley, Globe Laundry driver, accused by former employer W. H. Weaver of embezzling 45 dollars and 55 cents was bound over to the superior court for trial. Bonds set at 256 dollars with L. R. Ellis and John Dietricka as sureties. Smiley says he planned to repay the money. Weaver denies the claim and says the funds were used for private purposes.
Walt B Adams of Gloucester Mass visiting Bellows Falls says the Brooklyn loop at Santiago was caused by a wrongly executed order. He explains the wheel was reversed to ward the Viscaya and the loop formed as he corrected course, preventing a ram.
Chinese inspector B. F. Jossey was fatally shot while attempting to kill a skunk in his yard in Tucson. The coroner's verdict止 confirms accidental death though some claim he acted of his own accord. Jossey faced smuggl ing charges and was due for arrest, and claimed innocence while alleging a vast smuggling scheme involving Collector of Customs Vicey. Jossey had been appointed from Washington state.
Minnie J. Kinkead filed for divorce from Frank F. Kinkead in superior court claiming non support and cruel treatment. She alleges he drove her from their home soon after their marriage and she has supported herself since, with no children. They wed in Minneapolis on November 24, 19.
Two Pacific Coast Steamship Co. boats were in port this morning with the Walla Walla departing at 11 for a southern trip carrying a large cargo and over 200 passengers. The Umatilla arrived last night with five first and second class passengers. Capt. Cousins reported no difficulty securing cargo in San Francisco. The Umatilla was the first ship to tie up at Pier C where a new Pacific Coast dock warehouse nears completion ready to become one of the largest on the waterfront.
The Dirigo reached port last night after departing Skagway on the tid. No late news or gold dust consignments were received. Dawson reported the condemned Murderer O Brien making efforts to escape the gallows before his scheduled hanging.
Detective Philbrick captured Frank Gatt, the last of a five boy burglary gang. The youths aged 10 to 14 are suspected of robbing two houses and likely to be sent to reform school.
Harry Raymond and KR Vander Pool two hack drivers arrested by Officer Carr for violating the depot ordinance. Henry Brown taken into custody by Officer Freeman as a disorderly person. J Whedruff arrested by Officers Hames and Bevan. Bred Wah a Chinaman placed in city jail for safekeeping by Officer Clark. Henry Gets railroad wagon maker arrested by Officer Stepier for obstructing the street. J W Bedwarda arrested by Officers Freeman Hubbard and Chipman as a vagrant.
Brussels Aug 7 Hart Missen ex minister of labor died by self inflicted gunshot in his Brussels home. Domestic trouble is cited as the cause.
The Navy petitioner Robt. Burton Rodney vows divorce, calling his wife "a beautiful devil" with an ungovernable satanic temper and no provocation. He cites her conduct as justification for the split in a Washington filing dated August.
H Graves president of the White Pass & Yukon railway tours the Alaska line and surrounding area with officials. He reports the road in excellent condition with business stronger than last year and weekly shipments of 1000 tons into Dawson. He expects Klondike output to match 1909 and notes new camps like Big Salmon to rise. Machinery shortages and San Francisco labor troubles affect northern supplies.
Paris reports the sultan did not fulfill a promise to the French ambassador regarding quay claims. The French envoy left Constantinople on orders as negotiations end, while the Turkish porte declares relations with France broken and recalls the Turkish ambassador from France on vacation.
E A Seeley and G G Hunt retire from the Automatic Telephone Exchange Co. W B Claypool becomes general manager. Seeley and Hunt resign to pursue other business ventures in San Francisco and New Mexico, retaining financial interest in the company. Policy unchanged, no consolidation with Sunger TelePhone Co.. Seeley says operations continue as represented.
Professor Waldemar Schmidt intends to visit major European museums to collect material for a catalogue of Egyptian antiquities. The trip aims to gather data on items held across institutions.
An unfamiliar man named Willoughby entered the Ma chintete union hall during a strike. He played checkers with J F Carter, failed to produce union credentials, and was identified as a manufacturers' detective. He was asked to leave and escorted out.
Officer McClurg faced two hoboes at Hagheon Treature Co. store on Firet avenue near Washington street. Prescott and his companion entered the store and began looting. McClurg intervened, was attacked, and after a brief struggle handcuffed Prescott and jailed him. Judge George fined Prescott $5 in police court.
A crowd calling itself the Free Hot United Order of Holdups roams Beattie, asserts martial control near their operations and engages in bold daytime thefts. Last night they held an initiation on a Pike and First avenue corner, grabbing valuables from Aaron C. Rowe and three railroad workers as a surgeon bill and damages are sought.
After a one month recess the city council will reconvene Tuesday night rather than Monday due to Labor Day. The session faces 23 street improvement orders 11 assessment roll items and three street vacation petitions with many officer reports protests on property assessments and new resolutions expected.
In Elgin Illinois Wisconsin, Mrs. Chas Pelton of West De Pere underwent surgery at Sherman Hospital when a lightning bolt struck the flagstaff and skylight above the operating room. Glass showered the room injuring the patient and staff as Dr C L Pelton shielded and removed fragments. Firefighters in the building battled a blaze on the roof with hoses. The woman, heavily sedated, is expected to recover.
Charges against Chicago police rise as the civil service commission investigates. One claim accuses Capt. Colleran of using stool pigeons to stage robberies and signal arrest crews. Diamonds once displayed by detectives have vanished since the inquiry began.

Capt Hogle has built a new private ambulance to be commissioned in a few days. It sits at the city ambulance quarters on Fifth Avenue and James Street and will serve private calls only. The old ambulance will handle the regular work.
