Despondent man’s gas attempt fails. saved by first aid

James Dougherty 36, attempted death by gas early Saturday in A J Lee’s Jackson Street residence. Gas was traced to his room. Dr Bortes treated him about an hour, saving his life. Police and witnesses noted strong evidence of a possible self harm attempt amid domestic troubles. An additional note reports mobilization rumors from St. Petersburg and a juvenile probation case in a separate matter.

Montara Steamer Captured By Japs Near Bering Sea

Advices from Seattle report the steamer Montara of the Pacific Coast Steamship Co captured in the Bering Sea by the Japanese while carrying contraband goods to a Russian port. The Montara formerly the Willamette, sailed from San Francisco July 9 for Petropavlovsk with cargo. Master Reilly, a well known Pacific coast captain, and the crew reportedly have no money as the prize court handles the case.

Judge urges parental law to curb youth crime in Washington

Equalization Board Ends Its Sessions

The board of equalization raised assessments to about 200 000 dollars on franchises and properties including Northern Pacific Great Northern and Columbia Puget Sound railways and the Sunset and Independent companies. Prosecution and counsel urged power to tax while other properties saw mixed changes with some boosts and some reductions. The board also suggested taxing the 60 year lease of the University grounds and Post-Intelligencer building, while tampered books on Cawsey Carney contracts were corrected.

Tugboat Owners Consider Puget Sound Merger Plan

Robert Hays is said to be spearheading the plan, but Seattle’s major tug outfits deny receipt of formal notices and call the reports hot air amidst ongoing rumors.

Ground under car wheels fatal to brakeman Claude Binns

Claude EB Binns a brakeman on the Interurban was fatally injured Friday afternoon at Wapato on the way to Tacoma by falling between two freight cars. His arm and leg were cut off by the wheels and he died in Tacoma hospital Friday evening. The motorman did not notice the accident and he lay where he had fallen until residents sent him to Tacoma. He was unmarried.

Drowned Youths in Columbia River Near Vancouver

Vancouver Aug 26 Two youths Ralph Criss and Ralph Gillihan drowned in the Columbia river while swimming. Gillihan attempted a rescue but both boys were swept under. Criss body recovered yesterday as others tried to help.
