Federal Union Begins Campaign For 8 Hour Public Work

The Federal Union leads a drive in the city to enforce the 8 hour workday on public projects. Riley suspended crews but could not recruit replacements and may revert to the shorter day. Wages ranged from 1.76 to 2.25 a day, with workers seeking a shorter day without pay loss. Strikes are expected on other sewer and street jobs, and organizers consider leasing tents with cooking gear to send strikers to hop fields to earn a living until contractors concede.
