Wreck Kills Three on Excursion Train En Route to Olympia

A special excursion train carrying about 2000 passengers from Portland to a lodge gathering at Olympia derailed on the Northern Pacific line between Centralia and Chehalis shortly after 1 AM. Five cars and the engine left the track. three killed on the scene and more than 100 injured, with numbers rising as details emerge. Doctors from Centralia and Chehalis were rushed to the wreck, and the engine is said to have exploded after the derailment. The wreckage side and track embankment served as a makeshift hospital while survivors aided the injured amid a chaotic rescue effort.
