Cornelia Glass recalls luncheon with Kenny Beaton of New York City and Welford Beaton. They visit Hart Headquarters, meet staff, toast, and discuss Beaton’s Towne Gossip persona and plans to write for the New York American.
The Manufacturers and Merchants Industrial fair opens with the Made in Washington display in the Stuart-Henry White building. Chairman C. M. Williams calls it the largest and most complete ever, with over 250 displays and about 30 demonstrations. Dewey's orchestra provides music as attendees tour the aisles during six days of events. Industrial Preparedness Day is Tuesday with Gov Lister Mayor Gill and Capt Powell scheduled to speak and motion pictures of Washington industries shown.
May or Gill told 3500 at the Arena that one Seattle brewery sent more liquor to homes in a day than the permit system handles in a month. The rally, called by city ministers, urged support for enforcement of the dry law and to show backing to Gov Lister, Mayor Gill, Chief Beckingham, and Sgt Putnam.
Washington August 14 The first step in Wilsons plan to avert a railroad strike ended at noon when employes representatives left the White House smiling after a 90 minute conference. They indicated willingness to arbitrate if managers agree to review counter provisions later. Managers were reportedly favorable.
The ex Service Naval Men's club will hold a meeting Tuesday at 8 15 p m in the assembly hall of the Arcade building.
Minneapolis August 14 Miss Evelyn Laughlin of Seattle is in a local hospital probably fatally injured in an automobile smash. She was visiting Mrs O R Cutler wife of Capt. Cutler MN G here. Mrs Cutler also injured.

Asheville, Aug. 14. Survivors recount a daring ride by mountaineers who galloped through villages warning residents of the flood from the Lake Toxaway dam breach. Their warnings prevented loss of life as the wall gave way and waters surged toward the hills.
Mrs. Robert B. Liggett declares there will be no birth control law if American women accept three children each. She says higher education worsens motherhood anxiety and that immigration sustains birth rates, while funding twilight sleep ward construction in Detroit advances the cause.
Bob Gordon age 13 lives at 1632 Weller street and was robbed of his new $4.50 fishing reel at the port commission dock. Constable Ed Shrewsbury arranged a replacement reel at The Star office after the incident and asks Bob to claim it. The Star had reported the theft previously and Police Clerk Du Cett relayed the boy’s call.
Aug. 4 Chicago faces a general railway strike that would idle more than half a million workers. M. G. Dierd of Chicago and Alton R R warns Chicago, a major rail hub with 39 railroads, could see 50 000 freight cars left in limbo, and 100 000 railway workers plus 500 000 others would be affected nationwide.
In Johnston Pennsylvania the death toll from the head on collision of two trolley cars rose to 26 as more bodies were recovered from the wreckage near Brookdale. Victims died in local hospitals over Saturday and Sunday.
Republican candidate Charles E. Hughes arrives at King Street station at 6 10 p m and meets at the Washington hotel with county and state leaders before addressing a mass meeting at the Arena. He tours with an auto parade and returns to the hotel for a public reception.
Senator Miles Poindexter is in Spokane Monday to assist in the reception for Presidential candidate Charles E. Hughes. His speaking engagement at Everett Monday night has been cancelled.
Russian forces drive Austro German lines back on a 99 mile front toward Lemberg as Gen Bothmer retires from Strypa river positions. Russian gains on the Zlota Lipa and Stanislau threaten his right flank with 75,000 Austro German casualties reported. Orenburg Cossacks and infantry push the front while prisoners are taken.

Waterfront employers plan a Tuesday meeting at 11 30 to discuss arbitrating the longshoremen dispute. Mediator Henry M White hopes the offer will be accepted and a conference between the employer committee and the labor side will be set this week. If agreement is reached, striking workers in other cities except San Francisco and San Diego will likely follow the terms.
Dallas Aug 14 The third crude oil price cut in two weeks was announced by Magrolia Petroleum. Corsicana Light Henrietta Electric Strawn Thrall Moran reduced ten cents to 1.05 a barrel. Healdtos and Corsicana Heavy cut five cents to 45 cents.
