Three thousand people fill the Dreamland rink as United States Senator Miles Poindexter, a Republican candidate for re election, declares patriotism above party and admits voting for both Democratic and Republican measures and men when deserved. He defends Brandeis confirmation and cites 1910 1912 campaign enthusiasm. The crowd from Othell Kirkland Auburn Foster Orillia Chehalis Everett and nearby towns erupts in approval. The event marks a record turnout and signals continued independent support.
Antha Harrison, 16, missing since July, was located in Everett and taken into custody on a petit larceny charge. New York August 12 The settlement of the 400000 railway workers dispute with railway managers seems impossible without President Wilson or a strike that could paralyze 225 railroads. Mediation efforts failed as unions reject arbitration claiming past failures. Managers say they are ready to strike if arbitration is not accepted.
Nominee Hughes warned of widespread pork barrel practices and announced the ouster of Henry T. Clapp, longtime New York assistant appraiser, replaced by Daniel K. Finn, a Tammany leader and son of the noted Battery Dan Finn.
In Johnstown Pennsylvania on August 12 a head on crash of South ern Cambria Traction Co. trolleys at Echo left at least 17 dead and many injured. Fire engines were pressed into service as ambulances and multiple hospitals received casualties. Scores more were being sent to the scene throughout the afternoon.
