In Rennes a court martial began today to review a secret dossier weighing like a large basket. Dreyfus appeared with his lawyers as guards watched overnight while testimony cited an unpublished foreign diplomat letter.
An accident to the elevator serving the stereotyping room at The Star destroyed the paper first page as print went to press. The incident caused delay and loss of some news matter, according to The Star publishers.
The transport Victoria will be refitted on arrival in Seattle, not Tacoma, as claimed. A contract for refitting will be let soon after arrival. Frederick W. Whitney files for divorce from Adelaide M. Whitney after their January 1993 marriage in Greenwich Connecticut. She left him about nine months later and they have not lived together since.
A naptha tank exploded in the Cincinnati Southern tunnel during oil train movement near Chattanooga Tennessee just after midnight. The train caught fire and burned. Two engines were pulling the train and both engineers and firemen were fatally injured. Several tramps and one brakeman are missing.

Four guards and two workers throw lifelines and buoys. Robert F. Johnson of Philadelphia is pulled ashore and placed in a bun to recover.

A severe August thunderstorm struck Philadelphia causing extensive damage. Lightning hit the Emanuel Methodist church at Twenty fifth and Brown streets, damaging the deep roof and electrics. Trolley fuses burned out left cars dark, wires carried electricity, chimneys toppled, and heavy rain soaked the streets for about a90 minutes.
A burglar entered Edward Jaite’s Bridgeton home last night ransacked rooms and awakened Mrs Lara. The frightened woman fled screaming as the intruder locked doors and escaped after finishing his theft.
A $200,000 incendiary blaze is reported to have started by Black people at the New York Racket Store cellar in Phoenix Alabama. The fire destroyed the store and the entire business district. Several Black suspects have been arrested as investigators probe the arson.

John F P Reilly in New York received a letter from Dawson stating he is heir to about 14009 in gold dust under Arno McPherson's will. The case recalls Young McPherson who sought aid in 1897 after moving from Philadelphia to marry into a prominent family, leading to drink and travel to the Klondike on a share of earnings.
Mise Anna St. Claire Patterson, a prominent Baltimore society woman, arranged a deed of trust for $150,000 from her father to her husband Count Caesar da Conturbia and two trustees before their marriage last month. She reserved $60,000 for her personal use.
Washington August. The political relation of Filipinos to the United States is under discussion by the Bureau of Immigration and other departments. The broader issue concerns the natural rights of Filipinos under the Spain-US treaty and U S sovereignty over the islands, a claim now tested by rebellion.
Edward Kees alias Charles Phillipa, a Seattle reform school parolee, arrested by Portland detectives for obtaining goods by false pretenses. He admits stealing from eight residents in Beattie Tacoma and Portland, after parole from Chehalis reformatory. Police say he used fraudulently obtained professional cards to gather meals clothes and valuables, including buggy teams, from merchants. Tacoma authorities await Portland court action.
Eureka Til August the thirtieth anniversary of the sword’s theft at the Battle of Kennew Mountain. Captain Jo Major, of the Eighty Sixth Illinois Volunteers, was wounded and left between lines. He later learned a sword in Alabama was his and it was returned after Gov. Tanner received James Shaw’s letter.
In the House of Commons Sir Wilfrid Laurier Prime Minister of Canada rejected reports that he declined an invitation to the cornerstone laying of Chicago's new post office. He said no invitation had been received by the governor general or himself.

Fire at the Federal Steel Company plant last night damaged the fan mill. Cleanup is advancing quickly and authorities expect the main lane to be cleared enough to restart within a week. On hand steel will sustain merchant, rod and billet mills for that period.
