Mrs. S. Solomon of 339 26th Ave. awoke to a burglar bending over her as he rifled her husband’s trousers and her jewelry. The man crawled through a window at 1 a.m. and fled after a flashlight shone on him. Police searched the area but found no trace of the tall intruder in dark clothes.
Thieves attacked the Red Front clothing store at 1501 with a rear window entry and blew the safe, stealing $654.72 plus checks and papers totaling $141.75. Detective J B Flint found the door blown to bits. fingerprints and heavy blankets used to muffle noise indicate professional cracksmen.
King Bros. Co presented each Seattle Rotary member with an ilk necktie for the Rotary picnic. The event, described as the ilk necktie picnic, will be held Saturday at Rolling Bay.
A caller to Archbishop Hanng claims Father Heslin was kidnapped and hidden in a cave behind the McDonough ranch in Portola hills, about 30 miles from San Francisco. Police and multiple searching parties raid mountains and coast, tracing a mysterious ransom plot of six thousand five hundred dollars.
Hoquiam report notes a plan to survey 18000 acres in the Queets district for exchange with a tract near Index, involving university land. A decision on the trade is expected after the survey results are reviewed.
Police report a brutal bout between two women over a two year old child Elizabeth Taugner. Anna Taugner, 52, was found dead with severe injuries. Margaret Taugner, the child’s mother-in-law, was hospitalized with wounds.
TACOMA Aug. 6 Judge Clifford sustained Chilberg demurrer to five indictments charging he allowed a bank director to borrow funds without board approval. Attorneys argued loans were renewals from 1917, not new loans.
Two highwaymen in a roadster with a delivery body, one possibly Dr. KR. M. Brumfield, sought in Roseburg for the murder of Dennis Russell, were chased through LA PINE Ore by Sheriff Roberts and a deputy squad after an earlier hold up near Crescent.

Two bandits robbed Herman Stone the jeweler in St. Louis on August 6, escaping with about $6,000 in diamonds and watches after the daytime hold up.
A county-city building smoking ban excludes courtrooms for all, with Custodian William W. McGuire stating no smoking in courts including divorce courts. He notes corridors allowed for women but judges oppose any smoking in courtrooms and post office areas also bar women from smoking.
