Frank Melvin former Seattle police sergeant waived a preliminary hearing and is bound over to the grand jury on larceny charges. Eunice Melvin also waived a hearing and was bound over. The couple, held on $1,000 bail, were tied to the robbery of W. N. Brancamp’s home where $400 in goods and jewels were stolen.

A rail accident in La Grande Oregon left 17 injured with Mike Malamum reportedly suffering a fractured skull while riding in a smoking car. Others sustained cuts and bruises before wrecking trains cleared debris and responders took all victims to La Grande General Hospital.
In New York on August 2 the tug Edward exploded in the East River Brooklyn sinking instantly. The blast shattered waterfront windows and wrecked the ship. Captain Thos McCaffery’s body was recovered, five others were missing.
Roy C. Stretchberry a 26 year old civil engineer from Oregon City died at a Portland hospital after a car he rode in crashed over a bluff near Goble Oregon shortly before midnight He suffered a fractured skull and died about an hour after admission to the hospital.
John L. Smith a veteran foreman at the Olympic Portland Cement plant was caught between the couplings of two freight trains in RELSANGHAM and is in critical condition. The incident occurred yesterday and authorities report his injuries are life threatening.

United States Senator William Crow died at his Chalk Hill summer home after a long illness. He was appointed to the Senate by Gov. Sproul last fall after Senator Knox’s death. Crow had appeared in Congress earlier and had suffered anemia since December. He was born March 16, 1870, on the Crow farm in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
Funeral services for Harry Whit ney Treat, a Seattle millionaire sportsman killed in a British Columbia car crash, will be held Thursday at 2 40 p m at the family residence 1 W Highland drive with Rev H H Gowen officiating. The body arrives in Seattle Wednesday in care of C B Fitzgerald, Treat's Seattle agent, with Bonney Watson in charge. Mrs Treat and daughters Priscilla and Loyal Treat have returned from the tragedy scene.
Vancouver Washington August 2 records kept by A A Quanberg government weather observer show 1922 has broken all records since 1854 for long continued dry weather. No rain since June 21 and only a trace that day. A light rainfall on three days in June totaled .12 inch and May precipitation was below normal with 1.23 inches recorded.
An official from a major railroad union warned that if the shop men strike ends within 30 days, all railroad unions including the big four will be drawn in. Rail traffic faces collapse as equipment shortages threaten safe operation. In Fort Smith Arkansas two strikers were fatally shot by a deputy marshal at Van Buren freight yards. Washington reports Kent Harding issued a peace proposal to restore rights and end the strike, with the White House awaiting a reply from executives.
Chicago August 2. Road shopmen will accept President Harding's proposal to end the strike that began July 1. John Scott, secretary of the men’s union, said union chairmen in conference telegraphed the president with their decision. He added they accept the proposals generally with minor reservations possible. Bert M. Jewell commented on the morning discussion.
Clinton Ray Larson, 6, was shot through the right lung while inspecting a 22 caliber rifle in his home attic with his brother Lloyd, 11, and friends. The weapon was loaded from cartridges found in a belt. police report an accidental discharge. Clinton remained in critical condition at city hospital.
