President Roosevelt activated the opening at 1 15 pm Eastern time triggering cannon fire and cascading water as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition welcomed over 150 000 attendees. The dedication occurred near the Louisiana Purchase Monument with officials including Secretary Taft in attendance.
St Petersburg dispatch reports a heavy engagement on the Yalu with about sixteen thousand Japanese crossing the river on Thursday to attack 30006 Russians. Japanese sharpshooters are said to have killed many Russian officers as reinforcements arrive and the battle continues.
Washington reports state department officials notified of a big battle on the Yalu River with a Japanese victory claimed. No source given. London dispatches say no confirmation and no information reaching the Japanese minister or Russian embassy.
