Joe Smith, a former Twenty-fifth Infantry sharpshooter, barricades his Marland residence after a disturbance call. He exchanges heavy gunfire with a heavily armed police squad, is mortally wounded, and dies in a pool of blood beside two empty revolvers as daylight returns.
A Sofia university student was caught adding cyanide to breakfast at the military school. He was arrested and later died by suicide in his cell. Officials suspect ties to an anarchist society planning mass killings of students.
A canny druggist substituted rosewater for laudanum sought by 27 year old carpenter Sullivan of 1918 Fifth Avenue, saving him from one of two self inflicted attempts. Sullivan had planned suicide and was taken to the county jail for saner evaluation while his other attempt failed. Separately, Sullivan announced his Republican county convention delegates and alternates. William V A Sullivan and Miss Leora Conn were married at the bride's parents home with Rev. J. P. Llwyd officiating.
Port Townsend April 7. Mayor Charles F. E. Coon, candidate for lieutenant governor, was embroiled in a campaign moment as reports indicate a possible early announcement and ongoing support from local figures.
Petersburg reports officialdom that Japanese attempts to cross the Yalu at six or seven points largely failed with heavy losses in the lone success. The bombardment of Wonsan is confirmed.
In Johannesburg on April 27 a mine cage collapsed dumping 43 natives 1000 feet to the bottom, killing all aboard. United Railroad claims independents will oppose unions if a walkout occurs, risking wider freight and transit disruption.
Walter Richardson, night clerk at the Washington hotel, was bound over on a $1,000 bond awaiting a May 6 preliminary hearing on a charge of attempting to kill J. H. Gratten. Gratten, once employed at the hotel, says he visited with a friend Monday evening, was ordered out, and says Richardson threw a monkey wrench and fired a revolver. Management offered no statement pending the hearing. Richardson surrendered to Justice George this morning.
In a county central committee ruling, the Clancy faction won a key victory over Great Northern rivals in the First ward with a compromise on precinct contests. The decision phases out humorous disputes and sets delegates on primaries ballots, while regular delegations lead the tickets. The waterfront wards Fourth and First battle restarts at the primaries, with Pacific Coast company influence shaping outcomes.
Mrs. Botkin was held this morning to answer to the charge of murdering Mrs. Dean. Bail up to 160000 was offered but refused.
Shanghai reports April 37 that the Chinese warship is ashore on the rocks and a total wreck. All aboard were saved. A Vladi vostok squadron claim to have sunk four Japanese transports with 4,000 troops aboard is not confirmed.
A Shimbun report states that 200 Japanese have arrived in Manchuria by a rail line to destroy it and that several Chinese laborers tampering with the railway were hanged.
In West Beattie a public vote approved bonds by a two vote margin for an electric car line up the hill from the ferry landing. The plan needs a three fifths majority and received 136 of 2223 votes. Proponents say growth will repay costs. opponents warn the $40,000 build and rising operating costs.
The House erupted in a heated two hour clash between Republican William Dalzell of Pennsylvania and Democrat Bourke Cochran of New York. Dalzell attacked Cochran as a money driven pol and Tammany ally, while Cochran denied charges and moved to appoint a five member committee to investigate. The chamber adjourned as the clash spilled into day two with Simmons Cannon ruling on parliamentary privilege and the party line split.
Chief Delaney names Captain Ward drill master to resume regular weekly drills. Second patrol to report at 14 00 hours morning and third patrol at 15 00 hours afternoon. All members must provide full dress uniform by May 10 with no excuses unless approved. Ward, a former Army officer, will enforce thorough drill discipline. Mayor Ballinger supports Army style in the department.
After two hours of deliberation the jury in the state v Henry B Hocken returned a verdict of not guilty. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kriete criticized the court as a place where the state could not secure convictions. Three officers who had previously convicted Behockes of cruelty to animals testified for the defense on appeal.
The Alabama State Federation of Labor opened its annual meeting in Gadsden on April 27. Delegates discuss concerns affecting organized labor across Alabama with sessions planned over several days.
Capt O J Humphrey has leased the entire holdings of the North American Trading and Transportation Company. The report notes the deal is of limited importance after the company previously disposed of most Alaska holdings. Humphrey, with long Alaska experience, has held the Roanoke liner via John Benson Co, though a few Yukon steamers remain owned by the firm.
