Basin Desert to Yield to Dust Eaters Avengers
The piece traces the Columbia Basin reclamation plan amid dust bowl hardship. It covers 2 700 square miles of arid land in Washington state, proposed irrigation costing around 254 million dollars, and potential conversion of 2 million acres to productive farms. It outlines gravity canal and pumping schemes, Grand Coulee use, and the role of Goethals in evaluating financing, with emphasis on economic and geographic feasibility, timing, and benefits including transport and power. The report compares to the Yakima project, notes private landholdings, eminent domain steps, and potential federal action via Smith McNary measures to fund the vast irrigation effort.
