A war office update lists Boer losses in the Vrel area with 197 casualties. The tally includes four killed and 16 wounded in one skirmish, plus 110 wounded and other injuries in additional fighting on April 6.
Officer Wilson detained two men Will Nichols and others after noticing suspicious behavior at night. A sack held four large chickens with heads wrung off, and no explanation for their presence could be given.
The Seattle electrical workers face a lockout with companies halting or trimming crews. Pacific Coast Electric and others claim to have work for two thirds of the union men, while some electricians remain idle. The Building Trades council meets to settle the dispute, aiming for a local settlement that satisfies the unions and contractors.

Notices describe concrete sidewalks on 1st Avenue from Yesterway to Cherry Street with grading and guttering to Meridian and Aloha Streets. W P Trimble receives road building permission on Oriental Avenue to access tide land property. The board orders updating contact numbers for the corporation counsel and approves new pole erections.
Captain R Williamson becomes port captain for Globe Navigation Co replacing resigned Captain F P W Brooks. Brooks reportedly will join N C Co at St Michael to take a new position.
About 69 graduates attended the YMCA night school banquet in the association auditorium as the educational year closed. Attendance grew from 77 in September to 233 at year end with Prof. M. M. Moss as toastmaster and speakers on topics from the political club to the future. Building permits were issued for three local projects: a 460 dollar one story addition at 1014 Pike, a 400 dollar partial story house at 1412 North Forty-eighth, and a 6600 dollar two story lodging house at 823 First Avenue South.
The March city engineers report shows 35 building permits issued totaling 19 476 dollars, mainly for dwellings. The Alaska Steamship Farallon departs Schwabacher’s wharf at 7 tonight bound for Ketchikan and Skagway with 150 tons of general freight including 40 tons of mining machinery for Kasaan Bay. Robert Allison of A P W Mining Co. ships the machinery for Kasaan Bay mining development. W J Frederick travels to Prince of Wales Island with farm machinery. The Farallon also carries 40 Chinese laborers and canned goods to Ketchikan.
Ulyas es Baer of Oakland was sentenced by a federal court to seven years in San Quentin and fined $1000 for counterfeiting silver dollars. On her Beattie to Bremerton run this morning a break in her eccentric schedule disabled the Skagit Chief for a couple of hours, transferring passengers to the Athlon. The Skagit Chief reached Seattle at 11 a.m. Repairs needed are slight.
Cortelyou George B. Cortelyou secretary to the president is slated for the secretaryship of the department of mines when the bill creating the department becomes law.
Rep Jenkins of Wisconsin introduces a bill granting the Alaskan Gulf and Yukon Railway a 200 foot wide right of way from Valdes to Eagle City Alaska and alternate 10 mile wide land grants on each side. Rep Belchler of Ohio seeks president’s power to negotiate fur seal protections with Great Britain and to proclaim a temporary measure to ban killing outside St George and St Paul islands. Rep McLachlan of California proposes three Alaska district recording divisions and appointment of commissions.
Shocking St Louis grand jury report cites bribery and perjury among city officials and lawmakers. True bills indict Robert Bnyder of Kansas City for offering 100000 in votes and Geo Kobusch for perjury as bribery scales emerge in recent years. Many named fear immediate flight within 24 hours. others deny wrongdoing and vow to prove innocence.
Judge Tallman signed an order restoring Samuel J. Corbett to his former detective rank after a clash with Chief Sylvan over an arrest at J. H. Brownies’ house. The civil service commission had sustained the chief’s action. the superior court reversed on key points, noting the case was a simple legal question. Corbett resumes regular detective duties and will seek back pay from the date of reduction.
Harry Malin a 32 year old tailor vanished after leaving Stone Bros shop at 7 pm last Saturday night. His wife Mrs. Malin of 1946 Washington street reported the disappearance as police search continues. He is 5 feet 6 inches, stout build, dark complexion, mustache, wearing a dark suit and black hat.
In Kansas City the 25 bird event shoot off resumes with fourteen men from the tied group still contesting after 19 rounds. Marshey Wins Later Hirschey of Minneapolis clinches the Grand American title in the 53rd round as six contenders remain in the tie.

The Skagit chief steamer Braghs Chief was sold for $12,000 by The National Bank of Tacoma and Ladd & Tilton of Portland. Operated by Merchants Navigation Co. of Tacoma, Capt Peter Falk now commands the Skagit. The purchase ends a cut rate war on the Bremerton run, with Inland Flyer and Ata ion connections likely.
In the probate department of the superior court the will of the late Mrs Margaret J Pontius was probated. Executors named are daughter Mrs Mary Byer son Frank A Pontius and Everett Smith as associate executor. Estate valued at about 200000 chiefly real estate. Legatees include Mrs Dyer Lincoln Pontius Albert Pontius Frank Pontius Jr and Alice Irene Pontius. Will dated September 4 1901. Seattle and vicinity tonight and Sunday, with occasional showers and light to fresh winds.
The Renton strike at Seattle Electric Co. coal mines shows progress toward settlement as 25 miners return to work, with others to follow. Dispute started over wage cuts and vein work width, but clarified terms prompt most miners to resume duties.
Dank of Pennville in Pennville Indiana was burglarized and about 3000 dollars taken. A second gang of flower thieves operated around Sixteenth avenue and Veetlerway, damaging several gardens. Burglars also entered Jon Johnson’s room at 1800 Railroad avenue, stealing a valise with a new suit and a leather belt wet with pearls.
