An anonymous letter to Ennis and Rev. M. Flohr in Walla Walla threatened exposure unless $2000 was paid to be left in a field on penitentiary grounds. The letter urged spreading the tale that Ennis and Flohr were involved. police received the note and the scene remained without incident.
Canadian Pacific Navigation steamer Tartar reached Hong Kong yesterday from Tacoma. The voyage encountered ice and rough weather suggesting an early break up. The vessel will go to drydock before proceeding with a return voyage.

In Poughkeepsie New York on April 6 a headless nude male body with a missing right arm and right foot was recovered from the river near Stones. A tele graph wire and a six foot stick bound the corpse, which likely carried it. The victim's identity is unknown and foul play is suspected.
Chief of Police Meredith presented seven men described as strong armed hobos to be run out of town. Detectives Wappenstein and Phillipe arrested two, Mike Burns and John O'Brien, while Glasscock and Stewart detained the others in a water car. All are said to have prior city arrests.
Valley View Ky April 5 Sheriff Collier and two officers attempted to serve a writ on Gen Cassius M Clay for furniture tied to a man in the famous White Hall mansion. Clay refused entry sparks flew with 15 shots. No confirmation of injuries as neighbors fear to approach. The dispatch ties the clash to the ongoing Gen Clay romance and prior disputes over a wife.
In Chicago on April 6 two Oklahoma women from Newkirk engaged in a revolver duel. Mrs Ella Zeigtin was seriously wounded, possibly not fatally. Mrs Mary Daughson wounded as well. Zeigtin hopes to recover to pursue legal action.
Samuel N. Ferris, 33, shot himself after losing 1700 in a Baker City hotel. Ferris left mining property valued around 100000, and the tragedy occurred on April 5 in Oregon.
Fire forces rescue in Rescue, Alabama after blaze spreads from a shanty keeper to shaft No 7 trapping fifteen mules and workers. Fire remains burning. extent of damage to property undetermined.
Springfield April 6 The bill making ransom a punishable offense advances and sets imprisonment of not less than five years in the penitentiaries.

April report credits a woman for saving five people from death by gas in a house at 340 State Street. Despite weakness she carried the unconscious women and a child to safety, a physician revived all five, though two may still die from effects of the exposure.
Labor Commissioner Wm Blackman son in law of Gov Rogers visits Seattle and meets with local Democratic leaders. He is linked to discussions about Frank Hyman possibly becoming deputy grain inspector if John Wright retires. Blackman denies the trip concerns state politics.
Peter Holmes secured a permit this afternoon for a one story frame building at 1216 to 120 Pike street in Seattle. The project costs 15 500 dollars and will house tv flats with concrete foundations based on plans by Josenhana Allen. The schooner Challenger sailed from San Francisco for Seattle to Gay as part of the Nome fleet addition.
The president announced to the cabinet that Philander C. Knox of Pittsburg accepted the post as attorney general to succeed Mr. Griggs. Knox is a leading Pennsylvania attorney and longtime member of the Allegheny county bar.

A Teheran dispatch reports renewed religious disturbances in Constantinople. A moslem sheik named Ibrahim led a mob against the Sermite quarter, causing destruction and many Jewish deaths or injuries until troops intervened. Ibrahim was seized and ordered executed by the shah as a warning.
Miss Lillian Hawkins, 20, answered a knock at William Hilas’s residence when an unknown assailant dashed ca rbolic acid into her face. She recalls a prior chloroforming incident in December at Rock Creek. In January she fell ill after eating an unknown apple sent in a basket. Hawkins suspects a jealous married woman behind the assaults.
Commissioner O M Moore of the Pan American exposition says North Yakima districts will be well represented at the fair. Fred Parker will collect mineral exhibits from Cle Elum Mt Stewart Natches and Bumping river. The Commercial club under Commissioner Univerly will handle North Yakima exhibits. Fish Commissioner Little pledges valuable contributions and a Med hatchery may begin operations. The camera club and local artistes are asked to aid the album and D B Ward gathers King county agricultural and horticultural exhibits.
Paris reports a bulletin noting Premier Waldeck-Rousseau's condition has improved but marks continued throat trouble that may threaten strangulation. In Kent, Alexander Simpson pleads not guilty to the March 16 murder of Wm. Ross, with trial possible from late May to June. The steamer Charles D. Lane reached San Francisco from Seattle and plans a Panama voyage to Seattle for Nome duties.
The twenty second annual King County teachers institute concluded after highly successful sessions. Noted speakers included J M Schively on Character and D L Bardwell on Education for Character. Alfred Rolo performed a solo and Rev W D Simonds gave the invocation before reports were read and the closing address.
In a New York appellate division ruling the Countess de Castellane formerly Anna Gould will receive her full yearly income rather than the $200,000 limited by Judge Fitzgerald. The court held New York lacks jurisdiction, placing the matter under French jurisdiction. Justice Beach dissolved an injunction restraining trustees from paying more than $200,000, affecting numerous creditor suits.
St Louis April 5 Billy Madden arranged a heavyweight championship bout between Jim Jeffries and Ge Rubin. Jeffries to pick the date and bidding is expected from California and Connecticut. Terms set at 75 percent to the winner and 25 percent to the loser with the fight awarded to the club offering the strongest inducement.
President McKinley will spend a week in San Francisco as the guest of Union Ironworks President Scott. Scott will travel from Washington on the president's special train. San Francisco suburbs residence will host numerous social functions with Gen. Harrison Grey Otis and Horace Laughlin planning entertainments in Los Angeles.

April 6 Geo H Conner a 43 year old machinist killed himself in Main street with a shotgun after a strike left him jobless. He left a widow and several young children. The Nordstrom murder case moves to the supreme court again on habeas corpus.
President appoints Osborn Deignan boatswain in the navy. He previously served with Hobson at Santiago.
The state department reports hope that Manchurian issues will be settled peacefully. Russia seeks restoration of order and withdrawal of troops with no territorial ambitions, while China rejects Russian terms and worries about force being used.
