Sealing disaster off Newfoundland claims over two hundred lives

Wireless from the Red Cross ship Florizel reports the loss of about 200 seal hunters off the Newfoundland coast in a blizzard, with confusion over whether the New Foundland or Southern Cross was lost. In all nearly 4,000 men were in the sealing fields when the storm struck, as ships struggled in heavy ice and pack.

After a two hour telegraphic discussion between Carranza and Villa, Torreon is effectively in Villa's control since last Tuesday afternoon. Only two federal pockets remain, one in a fortified adobe in the southwest offering stiff resistance, with Carranza and his cabinet taking control of the telegraph office during the inquiry.

Five Hotels Lost in Million Dollar Fire at St Augustine

Fire swept across St Augustine destroying the Florida and Vedder hotels and other buildings, causing about 1 million dollars in damage. The blaze started in the Florida hotel kitchen and spread along the waterfront threatening total ruin. An unidentified woman died from a jump from a third story window. Federal troops were kept on standby to prevent looting as the courthouse and several historic structures burned.
