A Santa Ana meeting explained a two phase federal plan to protect civilian defense volunteers in Orange County. Mayor Jessie Reed of Seal Beach and F W Hickman were present as Thomas P. Douglas described War Service and Assistance duties separated from Red Cross roles. Enrollment with the local Civilian Defense Council is required to qualify for medical care and aid for volunteers including wardens auxiliary police firemen and observers under the new program administered by the Federal Securities Administration through state and county welfare departments.
The weekly progress report for the dim-out period ending June 13 notes city street lights and industries at 100 percent adequacy, illuminated signs and commercial establishments at 95 percent, and privately owned street lighting and residences at 90 percent. Residents are urged to turn out porch lights and place floor and bridge lamps away from windows even when shaded to improve effectiveness.
Orange County Judges and Constables Club invites the ladies to a dinner and meeting at the 101 Ranchhouse Cafe this Thursday night. The session is expected to feature the annual campaign night as all members seek re election in August. Mr and Mrs E W Reen will be guests at the meeting.
First aiders seek blankets to equip stretchers at stations. The local branch lacks funds and asks for donations. Donors may reclaim blankets later by marking them with their name on tape sewn to the edge.
An accident attributed to the dim-out conditions occurred on Electric Avenue in Seal Beach last Sunday night. James Middleworth of Surfside Colony drove about 15 miles per hour and struck William Gray of Long Beach, who was walking four feet from the curb. Gray received slight injuries and was treated at Community Hospital and released the next morning.
Damages totaling 149.86 were awarded to Edward P. Backs, a Placentia citrus grower, after a traffic accident at Bay Boulevard and First Street in Seal Beach on October 26, 1941. Judge Fred J. Smith presided. defendant was Constable Herman Drent of Seal Beach. Drent's car rear ended Backs' vehicle during a boulevard stop.
Young men aged 18 and 19 must register June 30 under the selective service act to complete wartime manpower canvassing. Also registering are men who turned 20 between December 31, 1941 and June 30, 1942, subject to military service. Registration runs 7 am to 9 pm at City Hall Seal Beach with chief registrar Mrs. Fionia Robinson and a team of registrars and clerks.
A meeting for the A B C Class is set for Friday at Community Church. The schedule includes a pot luck lunch at noon and a 1 30 p m business meeting and study period. Members should bring scissors and thimbles to tack a comforter for the Red Cross.
A nationwide scrap rubber drive runs from June 15 to June 30 to aid wartime needs. President Roosevelt urges all Americans to salvage reclaimable rubber, with oil companies paying one cent a pound and donating proceeds beyond purchase price to relief efforts. Local stations in Seal Beach participate fully, coordinating with War Production Board and salvage committees.
A Santa Ana gathering of Orange County Aircraft Warning Service observers led by T L Burns and Mayor Jessie Reed stressed the vital role of civilian aircraft observers in national defense. Speakers included Sheriff Jesse Elliott Captain Russell Smith Ollie Olson and Lt Col Gray who highlighted warning, detection, and charting enemy aircraft off California.
Police search for thief who emptied a Seal Beach USO welfare jar holding about $1 in nickels dimes and pennies at Tommy Helmick's bait stand on Ocean avenue. Mrs. Connie Brown found the empty jar and alerted Police Chief Lee Howard who urged officers to guard future USO receptacles.
