Seal Beach Plans Civilian Defense Upgrades

Seal Beach officials in regular session backed F W Hickman as defense council secretary with a confidence vote and discussed coordinating all defense department heads. Mayor Elmer J Hughes announced a forthcoming meeting of heads and plans to assure an adequate water supply during emergencies. Council urged compiling materials lists to prevent shortages as defense supplies remain uneven.

State Advised on Status of Defense Work Here

Registration and classification of registrants in Seal Beach Civilian Defense Council as of December 31, 1941 has been reported to the State by local secretary F W Hickman. The information was submitted as a questionnaire at the request of state officials. Seal Beach reported 193 volunteer workers of whom 30 are auxiliary firemen 20 auxiliary police 15 nurses aides and other auxiliary personnel not Red Cross three medical corps including doctors and nurses 12 in the staff corps including administrative and clerical workers 12 messengers 13 emergency food and housing workers 53 volunteered for community services.

Joseph Wisdom Hurt In Crash Near Canal Ave

Joseph C Wisdom, 35, of 135 Tenth Street, was hospitalized in Seaside with a fractured neck, concussion, and bruises after his car collided with a truck and trailer driven by Llewellyn W Andrews of Lost Gates on Pacific Coast Highway near Canal Avenue Saturday night.

Norton Homes Smash Records in Seal Beach Construction

Construction in Seal Beach breaks records as 52 additional Norton homes are planned to start by March 12 under defense housing project No. 77-122-0000-60A. Philip Norton has permits for 18 more homes now bringing total under construction to 48. About 90 percent of current sales go to defense workers, with possible future restriction changes discussed.

Lions Raise 14 76 For War Relief

Lions club at Glide'er Inn Wednesday evening raised 14.76 for Emergency War Relief Fund of the American Red Cross and voted to become a grandparent to one of 300000 Chinese orphans. Proceeds from Lions dinners were donated by Jimmie Americh while attendance was light due to Coast Association golf. Philip Norton spoke, sharing China and Orient insights from his wartime and journalism experience.

Police report shows Seal Beach hosts a diverse foreign born population with 57 residents listing birth places across Poland Germany Switzerland Greece England Mexico the Netherlands Canada Sweden Japan France Belgium Italy Denmark and Austria many are citizens while 15 are noncitizens all foreign born residents asked to report to the police department

County Clerk B J Smith announces 1942 jury panels for the Seal Beach City Court and Justice Court of Seal Beach Township. City court jurors include Laura Baker and Elizabeth Johnson among others. Seal Beach Band to Launch Monthly Concert Series

Seal Beach Municipal Band announces a monthly patriotic concert series to raise funds for war emergency needs. The first event Monday Jan 26 at 7:30 pm in Community Church Auditorium features Clark J. Higginbotham directing a program of Stars and Stripes Forever Marines Hymn 135th Field Artillery Anchors Away American Patrol Time Was Till Reveille Blue Skies and other numbers with a vocal chorus and popular tunes. Army personnel from Fort MacArthur were recently entertained here by local residents who hosted refreshments. The Army may return for more concerts early next week.

Edward Carroll of Puritan Cleaners Ill After Major Operation

Edward Carroll of Puritan Cleaners at 219 Main Street is reported to be recovering as well as possible after a serious major operation at Santa Ana Valley Hospital last Saturday. His brother Dr Vincent Carroll is the attending surgeon. Puritan Cleaners will remain closed for one month due to Mr Carrolls illness.

Seal Beach Red Cross district is nearing its $800 Emergency War Relief quota with over three quarters raised. Junior Brownie dolls sale and a paper drive by the Junior Red Cross contribute to funds for wartime relief. Proceeds and donations, including a Lions Club dinner, boost the drive as residents are urged to give what they can.
