Long Beach Dump Site Approved Over Seal Beach Protest

Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors granted Long Beach a permit to establish a 168 acre dump and incinerator on the Los AngelesOrange county line, despite Seal Beach protests over flood, rats, and northward expansion. The decision followed a planning commission recommendation and testimony from Flood Control officials, with opposition from Seal Beach officials who warned of risks and investor flight to nearby towns. Tax Office to Be Open All Day Saturday

City Tax Collector Co A Miller announced the office will be open all day Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for payment of the first city tax installment. The deadline without penalty is Saturday December 5.

Bars Restricted by DeWitt Order During War

Army and Navy orders bar service members in eight western states from buying liquor outside designated hours. Effective December 10, 1942, restrictions allow on premise consumption 5 p.m. to midnight and off premise 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Beer sales untouched. Authorities urged to close bars by midnight and reopen after 10 a.m., and off premise stores by 8 p.m., with 10 a.m. opening.

Gas Rationing Solvable Says Board Member James Watts

James Watts of the local War Price and Rationing Board states the gas rationing rules cover every situation and curb complaints by informing the public. He notes emergency rations exist when medically necessary and explains how farmers can appeal insufficient war necessity certificates. Tire inspection runs December 1 to January 31 with inspectors in Seal Beach and Los Alamitos.

Block Leaders Plan Program for Civil Defense Effort

City hall hosted a Wednesday meeting called by Mayor Jessie Reed to organize women for civilian defense work. Volunteers will visit every home in their districts with literature on defense, rationing, and salvage, distributing the government booklet What Can I Do and collecting outstanding questionnaires. The block leaders will also share Share the Meat for Victory booklets from the U. S. Department of Agriculture and assist citizens lacking them.

Fatality on 101 After Night Crash Injures Driver

Don M. Markham, 34, of West Los Angeles dies from injuries after a crash on Coast Highway 101 three miles east of Seal Beach near 3 a.m. Monday. He reportedly slept at the wheel and collided head on with a Santa Fe Trailways bus driven by W. B. Rose, 35, of Los Angeles. Bus passengers and driver unharmed. Markham moved to Long Beach Community Hospital. An inquest will be held in Los Angeles County.

Car Stolen Sunday First Taken in Year

Seal Beach police report Earl McDuffey proprietor of the Circle Cafe had a car stolen from the post office lot Sunday night. The keys were left in the vehicle and it remains unrecovered. Police Chief Lee Howard urges removing keys from parked cars amid talks of gas rationing. Howard notes 31 November arrests, 12 convictions, and 19 cases pending.

Garden group to centralize effort for victory garden program

Representatives from several organizations met to form a central committee to sponsor and advise the community in the victory garden effort. County committee recommendations were read, with tentative plans to be approved by respective organizations. Louis Robinson proposed soil samples be sent to Davis for analysis and Lee Benno of the Chamber of Commerce was tasked to study poultry and rabbits within the community.

Eastern Star Holds Impressive Installation Ceremony Sunday

Dignitaries from Orange County attended the Seal Beach chapter of the Order of Eastern Star as officers-elect were installed in a decorated school auditorium. Deputy Grand Matron Mildred Lawhead presided with retiring officers Eva Flanagan and Cyrus Shepard.
