Clarkson born 1840 Gettysburg served from 1861 through Civil War and later led the Third Arkansas cavalry. married Mary Beecher Matterson with five children and held multiple Civil War commands.
In Texan Paris on Sept 4 George L Wheeler white and Silas Lee and Hickman Freeman colored were executed in the Federal court after convictions for Indian Territory crimes. Wheeler asked to be hanged alone and died at 11.38 while Lee and Freeman climbed the gallows at 12.08 and 12.12 respectively. All three deaths were by neck breaking. Freeman remained calm, Lee showed distress.
Washington report states Captain Shoe maker chief of the revenue cutter service received a telegram that the revenue cutter Perry under Captain Smith captured three sealing schooners in the Bering Sea including the American Ameka and Beatrice British and the Joseph G. with two British vessels and one American seized for sealing in prohibition era waters.
National Republican Chairman Hanna sees Indianapolis convention as aiding McKinley on gold standard. Delegations from Pennsylvania promise two speeches in Canton while McKinley weighs visits to Kansas Minnesota and New York crowds. General Coxey delivers free silver speech to 200 Populists and Bryan Democrats in Ohio.

Harrisburg Sept. 4 The state board of pardons unanimously recommended a pardon for former Philadelphia city treasurer John Bardsley. They cited excessive sentence, his lack of means from bank failures, and his public service since confinement as factors supporting clemency.
The pardon board notes the man’s advanced age and declining health. It cites twenty-five years as a respected citizen of Philadelphia and his valued municipal contributions. He was an authority on finances and frequently consulted by judges and the city on legal obligations.

The governor canceled tonight’s reception due to official duties.
Acting Comptroller Coffin was advised of the failure of the First National Bank of Helena Montana. Ex Governor Hauser was its president. Liabilities include capital 500000 surplus profits 208000 deposits 2990000. Bank Examiner Flynn in charge. Failure due to officers inability to realize on assets.
The Democratic campaign committee says James Kerr will campaign in Pennsylvania starting at Clearfield and predicts Sibley will win Erie district. Frank J. Thomas confirms similar Erie district outlook. In Philadelphia, Fred Allen faces removal to Williamsport for trial on counterfeit moulds and coins. habeas corpus case moves forward.
The treasury gold reserve at the close of business today stands at 100291.1. Withdrawals of gold in New York totaled 125000.

Wheat and cotton show mixed moves, while iron and its products rebound slightly as speculative demand strengthens Bessemer and grey forge markets in the West and South.
Senator J C S Blackburn arrives in Chicago to confer with party leaders about the Indianapolis convention. He says the convention matters little yet adds the Buckner nomination makes Kentucky politics the most complex in the nation. He expects Kentucky to back Bryan in November and returns home to study the details.

Harrisburg voters learn that the Republican conferrees of the Fourteenth district nominated M. E. B. Olmsted of Harrisburg for Congress.
