Lincoln Neb November 4 Senator Jones telegraphed Mr Bryan that he had given up the fight and Bryan prepared a statement for the Associated Press conceding McKinley’s election. Hanna later summarized party returns showing McKinley carry many states and a large popular vote plurality, with notes on doubtful states and future projections.
Returns from multiple states indicate McKinley with a strong plurality and Republican majorities in Congress while Democrats gain in some regions. In Indiana Ohio and New York results reflect varied gains for Republican tickets and key races. Washington reports Attorney General Harmon removed James H. Couch, assistant U S district attorney for West Virginia, after his unsuccessful run for office on the Democratic ticket. Couch declined to resign his post or relinquish his conduct.
Adjutant General Cameron received an application for troop use in Oxford this afternoon as a threatened riot loomed. A company of infantry was immediately placed on duty.
At the October 24 meeting, President Dole and the council of state voted to extend a full pardon to ex Queen Liliuokalani. The action marks a formal clemency plan amid ongoing political developments in Hawaii.
