Philadelphia dispatch reports the state senate remains 44 Republicans and six Democrats after elections. The house moves from 175 Republicans and 2 Democrats to 174 Republicans and 30 Democrats, with 24 Republicans and one Democrat retiring and 24 Republicans and one Democrat elected.
Lincoln Nebraska November 4 The nerve of Bryan under the strain of last night and today is wonderful. He slept soundly between midnight and breakfast. His face showed fatigue but his eye was clear and he spoke quietly to a few newspaper men who have traveled with him. Some supporters unaware of firm neighborly quietude visited but were cordially but quietly received.
Lincoln Nebraska Navy 4 Mr Bryan has received many telegrams seeking definite information on the election. The BOS Wire says the Democratic national committee claims enough states for a majority in the electoral college, but notes the vote is close in several states and cannot be known until all ballots are counted. It urges both sides to watch returns to guard against possible mistakes.
Chicago November 4 Chairman Jones of the Democratic national committee sent a message to Bryan asserting southern states with 16 votes and Missouri with 1 to count, claiming Indiana Michigan Minnesota were favorable and West and California states looked secure. He insisted Indiana for Bryan and criticised press reports as partisan fraud, though later returns did not fully support his statements.
In Wilmington James G. Shaw a McKinley elector candidate appears on both the Republican and Union Republican tickets in New Castle county with an added letter. Some officials tallied only the head of the ticket while others counted Shaw separately. Final results hinge on Thursday’s official count and board of canvass action to determine if Shaw’s votes should be credited as one or two.
